Dear oud lover

Here is a clip showing the sound of a fixed and a floating bridge ouds from Fadi Matta.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjMvHWPbLkQ

The recording was done with Zoom H4n with no effect

Are you able to tell which clip is the 6 course fixed bridge and which is the 7 course floating bridge ?

The second clip begin at 1min. Both are rosewood bowl and spruce top.

The photos do not necessarily correspond to the sound clip:)

At a guess, I'd say the 2nd one is the floating bridge...

second one is the floating bridge....i like the fixed bridge better

I join the general opinion with the 2nd one as the floating bridge...

I think also the second clip with the floater.

Why this question, can't you remember which oud you play ? ;)

For this kind of comparison you should use FLAC (thanks to Chris), better tan YouTube, Winamp can play it without decompression...

BTW, if the number 1 is the floating bridge we're gonna feel smart

Surely the second one is floating bridge

Foobar2000 too ... the best audio player (and free) ;)

Ogg Vorbis (at higher bit rates) is also a good codec ... many MP3 players are able to play it ... MP3 and the audio of videos sucks (no offence intended), when sound characterisics are to be compared.

But Ogg Vorbis is an irreversible compression ... FLAC is lossless.

Uh..I have to go with my first guess -- which is: first one: Floating, second one: Fixed.

Oops...PaulO

katakofka - 12-21-2009 at 03:21 PM

PaulO wins :)

Actually the photos in the video are for the oud played:)

I should mention that the fixed bridge has a smaller bowl and soundboard length as compared to the floating bridge oud ( which was my rosewood floating bridge 7 course that I use often). However the fixed bridge has similar sound qualities as compared to the floating except that it has less sound volume (on the recording it might not appear)

thanks guys for taking the time to listen and reply
All the best

That was an ambush :(

Foobar2000 : got it :)

Listened to the clip before scrolling down and since I have both a floating and fixed bridge, I was happy to have guessed correctly as did Paul. :applause:

Whew....another lucky guess !

Cheers..PaulO
