Mandole information needed

ignatzh - 5-17-2010 at 01:26 PM

For several years now I've been looking for an Algerian style mandole. I've about to give up finding one in the U.S., and am considering the possibility of having one built. However, I have a number of luthiers specializing in mandolins and similar instruments scratching their heads in confusion.

My first question is: Does anybody know of a source for already made instruments in the U.S., or a really reliable source, either a luthier - made or a stock instrument outside of this benighted place?

Does anybody have information about scale length, fret placement (Ive seen them fretted for both taqsim-sounding and western type scales)

I may have to get two instruments, one fretted both ways, as I'm looking for the ability to play North African styles of music and some flexibility with other styles as well.

Thanks for any information anyone could give us.

Joe

Hey Joe,

I know that Mr. Saad Al-Tayyar, who is a great luthier in Ottawa-Canada, makes mandoles. If you want I'll send you his contacts by U2U.

yes, please send his contact information!

Does anybody have any experience working with Algerian luthiers? I think it wold be very difficult for me to do long distance from the US. I can't say it's near the top of my list of places to travel in the near future either...no offense to anybody...I'm sure it's a lovely country and the music's obviously of great interest to me.

hi Joe
you will find something searching in french language, like "mandole" or "mandole chaabi" or "mandole algerien"
There's a french online market where sometimes you can find some on sell
http://www.leboncoin.fr/annonces/offres/ile_de_france/occasions/?f=...
You should contact the various sellers to know if they want to ship in usa and how much should it costs.

About the frets, they usually put just two more than a normal guitar: one between the first and second and another between the third and fourth to make quarter tones the rest I think is the usual fret positions depending on the stringlenght of the instrument.
About the luthiers now I can remember just some names like Chaffa and Patenotte, surely the french users here on mikeouds wil give you more detailed informations on the matter.
Ale
