Are these really taqasim?
It looks to me that he is reading the notes from a sheet, and my understanding was that taqasim are improvisations. (I'm not being "smart" here, just
trying to learn and understand.)

Hi,
My guess is that the scores are for pieces he will play eventually, and that it is just that when you have something in front of you like that, your
eyes go to it even if you aren't using it at the moment.
Also, sometimes when introducing a piece you try to foreshadow the melodic development of a composition within your own taksim composition, and
sometimes sneak a peak at the piece to remind you of what path(s) you might like to take in the taksim. But I think here his eyes are just roaming
around until he seems to actually start a composed piece at the end of the video - or maybe not, hard to tell with this player and his repertoire
here.

Thank's Mav, you could be right.
Just looking around at a few vids of him, I didn't see one where he didn't have a music stand and sheets in front of him, so I guess yes, it could be
just for guidance. Could just be a song list, and he's thinking of how to lead into a piece... Whatever he's doing, he is very good at it!

I tend to go along with Mav's view, whatever Safwan is playing, he is doing it well, and deserves our respect His eyes are not glued to the score all
the time, and he's as in touch with the spirit of the music as can be. Also, anyone out there who reads music will know that to play from a score note
for note and making the music sound that fluent is not easy, so even if he was looking at every note that would be something of a skill to appreciate.
I bet Safwan can let rip without any score when he's at home and not on any stage. Perhaps he feels comfortable with the music stand in front of
him, and for all we know there may be a photo of a beautiful lady on the stand and not ( or along with) any notes! ) regards, MW
