Im pretty sure that is an Akg C411, which seems to be the favorite choice of many musicians in turkey inclusive the TRT orchestras..
I use it myself the last 9-10 years and i am very happy with the results.. Remember only to use a notch filter to reduce the feedback if you have to play really loud..

I'll second that, and the few times I've used one, with the matching belt-pack B29 pre-amp, I too was very happy with the sound, they work well on oud, saz, violin etc.

Not exactly an agile instrument, is it? Can anyone play "flight of the bumblebee" on it?

Guys thanks for the replies!

Nikos yes this is where I first noticed this thing being used on TRT...so some of you have used it in a live setting with monitors, etc? Or is this better suited to how TRT uses it.

I'm really in the market for a system on my Mustafa ud and still hate the idea of drilling into the side to install a piezo.

Why on Earth would anyone want to?

Why are you so dismissive?

teslim - 9-25-2010 at 10:47 PM

i agree with sasha...what kind of way is this to talk about such a extremely delicate and powerful instrument as the tanbur...one has to be incredibly agile and articulate to play it..tanburi jamil bey being one of the many examples...it is embarrassing to hear such dismissive comments put across with that kind of attitude..ignorance knows no boundries in this case..

Just need to put my 2 cents in to defend the tanbur. Powerful indeed!

This is some of the most "agile" (and beautiful) playing I've seen.

I'm pretty sure fernandraynaud was being sarcastic in his comment :)

But if anyone needs to be more convinced and hear something more choppy, here's a great Nihavend taksim from Murat Salim Tokac:

Recorded almost 20 years ago and his style now is pretty different from this. In the video it reminds me more of Cemil Bey's technique, ideas and melodies. Really amazing.
