Making a horn Risha from scratch

Sazi - 12-17-2010 at 04:00 PM

I've searched and posted this question on the risha threads but no response, so here goes another try...

Can anyone PLEASE help me out with advice on how to make a horn risha from scratch, I know there are members of this forum who know how to do it, - don't worry, I don't want to steal your business, and you're not losing mine, I'm a pensioner and could never afford an ongoing supply of pre-made ones. I just want to be able to make my own.

Also I read that Buffalo is preferable to cow, does anyone have any info re if this could be true and why?

I have a choice of either cow or buffalo complete horn.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Ah, many thanks my friend, I see I didn't search far back enough, so many questions so little time! still it was buried pretty deep, hope this helps others in a similar situation.

Greatly appreciated,

It looks like buffalo in the video, anyone have any idea of what is preferable, cow or buffalo? I have the option of either, but the longest wearing would be best.

Hi Sazi,

What do you mean 'from scratch' ? Starting from a living buffalo ? :D

I bought some sets of those inexpensive egyptian horn rishas, I had to throw away some of them but most were good starting points for making fine rishas after some sanding and polish.

regards,

Dan

:D er... I don't think I need to go that far... nah,
not one of the online sources I found for horn blanks ship to Australia!
:( but I have a friend with both cow and buffalo horns (not on their head...) for sale, so I would be starting with a full horn "in the round"

I wasn't sure if I needed to boil it or something like people do when making horn rosettes... or soak it for 6 months in oil etc.

I'd still like to know which is preferable, cow or buffalo ?

Hi Sazi,

indeed the sellers of this stuff on ebay or amazon don't ship outside the US...

But I ordered them directly from mid-east, they agreed to ship to France, so I'm sure for Australia it will ok as well.

Thanks Dan, I'd forgotten about them, I haven't looked at the site for months, but I've never asked if they ship here because they're always out of stock, and have been for some time, at least every time I've looked... and they're still out now.
How long ago did you get yours from them?

Danielo - 12-19-2010 at 07:19 AM

It was 1 month ago. If I remember they just had a new stock...
