oud teacher needed in london

oudheinz - 1-13-2011 at 02:40 AM

hi,
now that i have an oud, i need an oud teacher to get started with my new instrument.
the method book i have is from mansur nariman (iranian) and uses the DGADGC tuning, so ideally the teacher would use the same. (though i am not sure whether this is important or not)...

i live in london, any recommendations??

thanks!!

Hi Oudheinz. I would recommend Ehssan Emam an Iraqi oud player and a very good teacher based in London. I have sent you his mobile number to your u2u.
Cheers

May I ask what the difference in styles (standard?) is between Ehsan Emam and Ahmed Mukhtar?

As far as I know they are two most well known oud professionals in London.

difficult one, I know Ehsan Emam as I took some lessons with him more than a year ago, but haven't met Ahmed but been to couple of his concerts , he is very good oud player but don't know about his method of teaching.you can try both snd see which one you prefer , Ehsan is very flexible and open, you can ask any thing, he is very friendly person and he enjoys teaching ,he is influenced very much by Munir and Jamil Bashir style ( that is my personal opinion ).

good luck

ok,
so far i am very tempted to take lessons with Ehsan Emam, but there is also an egyptian oud teacher, who would visit me at home to give lessons (instead of having to commute to ehsan's place for 1 hour).

i am wondering whether for a beginner it makes much difference to have a good (the egyptian guy) or a really good and famous (ehsan) teacher? what would you recommend? would there be much difference in general technique?
