It works for me.
I don't really think you can "lean out too far"--you're a great musician, and you're pushing the boundaries of the instrument.
Some won't be able to accept that, but I really think that we need musicians such as yourself to re-define what we consider "oud music."
There will always be traditionalists, and I generally fall into that category, as well. But without development, the instrument can become a bit of a museum piece.
(I can almost hear people getting disgusted by that statement).

Thanks for your kind comment. I was already a bit affraid I'd hurt the feelings of some fellow oud player by pushing it too far; but in a certain way I feel our music is very much rooted in tradition as well. Especially my dear friend and great cellist Muneer B. Fennell went through the 'hard way learning' school of the African American's music (he has also a full classical education).
