Repairs

Jonathan - 5-25-2011 at 10:36 AM

I think I have used just about all of the major oud makers/repairers in this country, and I have been very happy with the work that they have done for me on some major repairs/restorations. The only problem has been the amount of time it takes to get the repairs done--usually more than a year, often more than two, and even approaching 3.
Quite honestly, some of them are such superb craftsmen that it is well worth the wait.
But, I have to admit that I would love to find a place to get quality repairs/restorations done more rapidly.
I'm in the US (Los Angeles). Have any of you guys based in the US shipped ouds overseas for repairs? What has been your experience?
Thanks!

Why not try Viken Najarian in your area ?
I don't know if he takes repair &/or restoration works, but he sure might help.
See his site for more info & contact info.

I have. Viken does absolutely superb work. He has one of my ouds now. I am just looking for more sources, so that I can get the work done on a timely basis.

Well, try Najib Shaheen in NY ! He did excellent job, as I've heard. The best was Simon's, his brother, Nahat oud.
I think he has a site of his own, but couldn't recall its name. I'm sure some members do.
Across the ocean shipping for repairs is not recommended at all.

Good luck Jonathan

Hi,
I used Stephen Faulk in the SF Bay Area to rebuild a wrecked old syrian oud I got from Palmyrami, and he did a great job IMHO. Here's some pics and so on. I've been meaning to post about it, but haven't had a chance to do a good audio recording of it...

Try Richard Barnes at the Folk Music Center in Claremont, CA

Thanks, guys. I appreciate it. I know Richard's (Rufi) work, and he has had a couple of my ouds. I am impressed by the work that everybody in the US has done for me. I was just looking for more options. Thanks again.
