Listen to the intro/main melody:

Sounds like cumbus, but there's something different about it.
EDIT:
You can see it here at about 1:26:

and here, once the main melody starts:

Is that a lavta?

in french they call it a mandole.
Then I don't know much about.
Alfaraby - 5-29-2011 at 04:07 PM
I guess it's the Algerian 4 course oud called Quitra (little guitar) tuned RE, LA, MI, SOL .
However, the quitras I've heard is bowl-like back not flat back like the guitar, so I'm not sure enough.
Yours indeed

suz_i_dil is right. I searched for "mandole" and found the info I was looking for, though it seems to be very rare. I can't even find a place to
purchase one online.

try searching with "chaabi mandole"
sometime ago there was a blog with different algerien mandole on sell but now I can't find it anymore
these instruments were on sell in a wide prices range, from 300 till 3000 euros depending on the luthier, some of them lives in france so the prices
was for europeans..
you can find time to time some of these mandole on sell here (from france):

A link on youtube with another mandole player.
The most amazing is probably the presence of the banjo and the oriental colour they give it.
