Slow oud pieces . . .

antonis - 9-6-2011 at 11:27 AM

Hello my fellow "woodmen"!:))

I am playing oud for about 8 months now and although I've tried a couple of eastern traditional songs, my repertoire is unfortunately limited to western music.
If anyone here would be so kind as to suggest a few traditional or contemporary eastern songs I could learn, I would be very grateful. What i am looking for is slow- mellow-full of emotion stuff. Fast paced or dance songs not so much.

Titles, videos, sheet music - we accept everything! :airguitar:

spyblaster - 9-6-2011 at 11:30 AM

i guess "Bint el Chalabiya" is exactly what you're lookin' for.

antonis - 9-6-2011 at 11:32 AM

This actually is one of "the couple" I've already tried.

Thanks though.

Cecen kizi is a piece that can be played very slow and very fast, and it's a standard in the Ottoman oud repertoire...

Wich one is more accurate to the traditional song?

The middle one, as far as I can see it's the only one that accurately notated the Huseyni makam (I suppose the others are for instruments that can't play quarter tones) although keep in mind that turkish notation is written a fourth high, so the first note should actually read "e" (mi), etc.

thanks arsene I'll give it a go!

A very effective way to get well-versed in the "oriental" repertoire is to study some semai's. Start with makams like ussak, huseyini, rast, niavent.

For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ekc2d-jlMY (huseyni saz semai)
sheet: http://www.neyforum.biz/4images/details.php?image_id=5191&sessi...

antonis - 9-7-2011 at 07:01 AM

these are on turkish notation or standard?

Ararat66 - 9-7-2011 at 10:46 AM

Hi Antonis

There are a lot of very beautful and soulful Armenian pieces (and Greek no doubt) you might want to try. I have no notation but here are some suggestions and the various versions you can listen to:

Sirdus Vera Kar Mu Ga - Udi Hrant Kenkulian

cd, Udi Hrant Early Recordings Vol 1.

Alan Shavarsh Bardezbanian
cd, Oud Masterpieces: From Armenia Turkey & Middle.

Richard Hagopian
cd, Best of Armenian Folk Music

Voch Me Dzaleeg - traditional !!
Sev Oror - traditional !! spine tingling version !!

Alan Shavarsh Bardezbanian
cd, Oud Masterpieces: From Armenia Turkey & Middle.

Some great pieces by Ara Dinkjian

The Invisible Lover - cd, An Armenian in America (& Night Ark, Petals on your path)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAoMNzh6m7E&feature=related ... comes in at about 4.00

Fly Away -cd, Petals on your path

Woman of Smyrna - Haig Yazdjian ... I love this ... not easy to play though, lovely timing

and also Karsilamas - Sokratis Sinopoulos / Periklis Papapetropoulos (from a fantastic cd of Greek music)

cd, Ethnic stories
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000R00NDC/ref=dm_sp_alb?ie=UTF8&a...

There are some lovely lullabies by Hasmik Haratounian (cd Armenian Lullabies http://www.amazon.com/Armenian-Lullabies/dp/B000QQWG1Y/ref=sr_shvl_... ) one in particular you may like is

Navei Oror
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ozY8LMwFAA

Koon Yeghir Balas - which Ara Dinkjian also plays on cd, Voice of Armenians by Onnik Dinkjian
and John Bilezikian on cd, Music From the Armenian Diaspora
here it is called 'lullaby'
and is all over Youtube as 'Oror'

I calculate this initial search could last you a lifetime :)

Cheers

Leon

arsene - 9-8-2011 at 07:21 PM

@antonis - the sheets i posted last (the semais) are in Turkish notation. I do not have them in normal one :)

@ararat66 - thanks for linking to my video :) (voch me dzaleg)
here's the link to Sev Orer btw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVXoRHsPnMs

arsene - 9-8-2011 at 07:27 PM

Here's a nice PDF with short etudes for each makam, that should also help with getting acquainted with them a bit :)

antonis - 9-9-2011 at 02:18 AM

Arsene first of all I thank you again, you are very helpful.
Secondly, is that really you playing ??? How many years are you practicing? If in 5 years i am half as good, i would be satisfied!
And thirdly, are you greek? Because in your mood it says "endaxei", wich in greek ( εντάξει ) it means "i'm ok"!

arsene - 9-9-2011 at 10:08 PM

Ahhh antonis if only it were me playing....! Alas, it is not me, but the great master himself (Alan Bardezbanian)... I meant to say I uploaded the video of him playing... although I'm trying to get there! Soon, I will have songs of my own to upload, I just started with a new ensemble :)

I am Romanian, but often mistaken for a Greek... Not sure why :) http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/281374_1829876984326...

Ararat66 - 9-10-2011 at 12:05 AM

Arsene, you're dead right about those ...

... the tone and intensity on those Al Shavarsh Bardezbanian pieces are astounding, particularly the slow pieces where he allows lots of space for the effect of each note and phrase to resonate and simmer.

I sometimes play these on a long car journey quite loud when I'm alone (no kids etc) and it makes the hairs on the back of my neck tingle.

Hi Arsese

That slow version of Cecen Kizi is wonderful, Huseyni is such an evokative mode - udi Necati Celik is a truly amazing player, breathtakingly good to my ears (apparently you can breathe through your ears:cool:)

Yep, it's wonderful rendition, I love how they put hicaz mandira in the middle there as well :)
