Aziz, is it nylon or gut or PVF/"carbon"?
It sounds like PVF.

Axiz, fernand works.

I don't understand. They say for long scale, and low tension, and then they say the nylons are heavier than usual. And only about 10x the price I pay for Maris. Your sabassi is long scale? Do you know the gauges on therectfied nylon plains?

Brian Prunka - 1-4-2012 at 09:30 AM

Fernand,

The nylons are heavier than the other long scale set I offer. The nylons are rectified.

You get Maris for $6? They are good strings, definitely the best value out there for the money.

Pyramid strings are better, in the opinion of myself and many others, but whether they are worth the difference in price is of course up to the individual.

I will soon be offering similar sets from Savarez lute strings which should come in at a lower price point for similar quality (not as low as Mari, unfortunately). They will also be offered with PVF as an option.

fernandraynaud - 1-4-2012 at 10:57 AM

I was wondering about how bright they sounded, and the paradox of fatter strings being lower tension.

The reason say D'Addarios basses are higher tension than say Maris, is because the winding uses a thicker wire, so for a given gauge you have more metal and less fiber, ie higher density. But nylon is pretty much nylon.

I see maris went up a bit but still Pyramid seems very high. The lute market has a specific cachet that translates to higher prices I think. Even worse on viola da gamba where a 6 string set can go for $200. It's not all in the quantities made/sold. Ehhh, never mind ;-)

Brian Prunka - 1-4-2012 at 02:57 PM

Yes, the Pyramids are expensive, but they are definitely constructed differently than the standard strings in most oud sets (even their own). I don't know the details, but they are much less stiff (I mean prior to being put on the instrument) than comparable gauges from other manufacturers (Savarez lute strings being an exception, they are similar).
