Another Mystery Tool Contest

Dr. Oud - 2-11-2012 at 05:54 PM

What is it?
What's it used for?
Why?

All three questions must be answered to win.

1st place - genuine Hand crafted autographed Dr. Oud Mizrab.
2nd place - atta boy & bragging rights
3rd place - there is no 3rd place, forgetaboutit.

Usual rules apply: professional luthiers, employees of Dr. Oud Press (yea, right!) and former winners are ineligible (you know who you are, and so do I).

Bring it!

ohh not an easy one.. but I'll say a kind of a Frame Saw..

Dr. Oud - 2-11-2012 at 08:12 PM

nope, try again.....

Mehran - 2-12-2012 at 03:33 AM

Hmmm. Is this some sort of tool for aligning adjacent pegs in when installing them? Thought about this because of the concave rounded edges of the frame.

TruePharaoh21 - 2-12-2012 at 08:05 AM

Wild guess: a spreading tool, used when applying the polish to the face of the oud, so that you don't scratch the surface?

MatthewW - 2-12-2012 at 08:20 AM

Richard- what is the actual size of this tool? It might help some of us make a more educated guess. thanks

charlie oud - 2-12-2012 at 12:36 PM

Half of a chair. When complete you can sit on it while making your oud.

luan - 2-12-2012 at 01:35 PM

That is where you put the picture of your grandma inside the oud

koma - 2-12-2012 at 11:15 PM

ok guys stop those wild guessings, I got it...

that's, believe it or not, a small version (anyways we're waiting to see the size of this thing) of the LYRE OF UR.. check for yourself

:D

just a wild guess, would it have anything to do with making or installing or removing a rosette?

Microber - 2-13-2012 at 05:36 AM

Is it a tool to spread the strings to work on the soundboard without removing the strings ?

I have a conundrum. MathhewW and Microber have 1/2 of the correct answer each. So in this case I will award 1/2 mizrab to each. I will need a shipping address from each of you, send w/ U2U or to richard@droud.com.

A first place tie nullifies any second place finish, so no attaboys or bragging rights are available.

The tool is also useful for sanding the fingerboard without having to remove the strings. It's a real time saver - the strings just have to be loosened, not re-tied at the bridge or re-inserted into the pegs.

unless of course you kindly decide to award microber and me with one of your Dr Oud mizrabs each..:D :D
U2U sent thanks Doc.

Microber - 2-14-2012 at 11:17 AM

dear Richard, I had a hunch it may have been your sense of humor with half a mizrab, but with the economy as it is...;)
regards, MW

paulO - 2-15-2012 at 09:49 AM

What...now nobody appreciates your sense of humor ?? Maybe you'll need to post a sound clip so the winners (and losers) can hear the fact that it's a joke, etc....maybe......Hi Richard

Regards..Paul

Microber - 2-15-2012 at 10:08 AM

Hmm...
Is there something I didn't understand ?
Two winners... half a mizrab for each one... yes I understand the joke.
But as I am not a native english speaker, I didn't understand : 'atta boy & bragging rights'.

Robert

Dr. Oud - 2-16-2012 at 08:45 PM

"atta boy" is slang for congratulations.
bragging rights is an authorization to tell others about your accomplishment, over and over and over....
