Who makes a good 7 course arabic oud?

Masel - 9-14-2012 at 11:03 PM

I really want one, but I don't know where to look. There is a very talented saudi man who makes them but I wrote him and he said he is not building currentnly, any other thoughts?

spyblaster - 9-15-2012 at 01:19 AM

how much do you wanna pay for it?

JT83 - 9-15-2012 at 01:59 AM

Hello Masel,

In my humble opinion, you really cant go past Veysel Sarikus. I have 3 seven course ouds from him, infact I developed them with him...I strongly recommend his instruments, they are amazing to play and have a beautiful spirit to them.

They are $1500US + postage, but you will get a top of the range gorgeous instrument with great woods and top craftmenship. See more details here: http://www.josephtawadros.com/oud.html

Here are a few clip of me playing them:

price correction!!!

Hi Masel :wavey:
I really do agree with JT.
After I tried JT`s oud on one of his gigs in germany I decided to order the oud from Veysel Sarikus. One of the best "buy-a-new-instrument-decision" I ever made (and I made alot :D ). like he said, its a beautyfull oud ,very good to play and with its own soul.
I payed around 1300 € (not 2000$ like I wrote first-sorry Veysel:)) because there is an additional under-the-bridge-pickup installed and my own logo on the neck.

I`m very happy to have this beauty!!

Go try it out!!

Marcus

Hello Masel
if you are after a real authentic arabic sounding OUD with all the mellow, depth and mystic spirituality you should consider michael moussa of uk- I have got his Al lethy 7 course replica after a long search and believe or not I am still stunned every time I play it- many members of the forum have this particular unique style- and also you will find some clips on the utube; not professionally done but will give just a flavour -his site
http://www.magicstrings.co.uk
and in utube or the forum search for michael moussa
best of luck

Dimitris Rapakousios of Athens makes 7 course models which look rather nice, although I also think the Veysel Sarikus model is a good choice.

I own a Cengiz Sarikus oud and love it, but I have also played ouds by Rapakousios which were incredible. Granted, none of these were 7 course ouds, but I would have full confidence if I was to purchase one from either of them.

Money aside, it all depends entirely on the sound and style of instrument you want.

thanks everyone, looks like i need to do some research. i liked the look of many of these, especially fadi matta as i want a floating bridge.

another question, do you think it is possible to add two sympathetic thin metal strings above the bass, as like an azeri tar has? they are only played open so wouldnt take space on the fibgerboard. has this been done before?

JT- you can pick up a two course oud and make it sound good.:)
Your 7 course oud by Veysel does sound good, as did the other one you had made by Usta Faruk.

Nazih makes nice ones, as does M Moussa and other makers whose names can be found in this forum.

EDIT

I was inquiring if Kamil Mowais has made 7 course ouds, and have been informed that master Kamil has indeed made 7 course ouds. If anyone is interested in an oud by Kamil Mowais, 6 or 7 course, please contact Alfaraby music whose email can be found in the FAQs, or send him a U2U.
If anyone has not yet seen the thread on Kamil, please enjoy:

we are spoilt for choice, and then by the size of our budget, and not least by the amount of our talent to make the oud sing.
may you find the oud that works for you Masel!

I actually just found a Nazih Ghadban 7 course a few minutes away from me. Beautiful Oud but he's asking $3000 firm which is crazy expensive. I'm currently talking to Michael Mussa about a custom, he is extremely kind and helpful as is Dimitris mentioned above.

Dear Sir

Each oud has its own price even it is a 7 courses oud, that it depends of its characteristics and its sound.
a 7 courses oud like Mr Alami's oud posted in this respected forum recently:
http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=13356

it costs with the cost shipping more than 3000$.
at the same time I can make for you a good 7 courses oud for 2000$ including cost shipping.

Respectfully
Nazih Ghadban

In 2008 I tried out the one that Charbel Rouhana played, (probably still plays) made by someone in Lebanon, it was great, try to find out who made his oud.

if you already know the answer to this please remind me of the name of this maker as I want one , one day

Amos - 10-24-2012 at 03:09 PM

When I studied with Charbel at Simon Shaheen's retreat around that time he was playing a 7 course Fadi Matta and I got the feeling from him that Matta's ouds were pretty much what he was playing at the time so that is most probably the answer...they are amazing instruments.
