Experimental Hijaz

ALAMI - 4-5-2013 at 05:01 AM

This is a work in progress experimental composition.
Oud & Piano
I wanted to experiment with harmonies and some jazzy chords along with a hijaz melody, and see how to make it work with the presence of some microtones.
As you will notice, only the oud is real.
I am not sure if it is working or not, ears and opinions welcomed :)

Hi Alami

I enjoyed that - the voice of the oud and piano work well together. I liked the percussion except the high hat in particular sounded distracting and the overall percussion sound a little sharp and tinny, but nice grooves beginning to happen. I would need to listen again properly later.

Thanks Fadel and Leon for your comments.
I am a total novice with this Cubase and VST stuff.

The mixing is really bad, and the availability of everything makes you you want to try things you don't really understand or know how it should be played like drums, brush kits and percussion.

still it is exciting, and I am liking the possibility to experiment stuff. the last time i tried a music composition software it was like 12 years ago, piano used to sound awful.

Hi Alami

I think you should go for it in terms of being able to mix a wide range of instruments, it is a really good way to learn and lets face it all the great udis were phenomenal experimenters.

Cheers

Very interesting:)
Some very interesting chords and harmonies around Hijaz.
Good on you for trying new things and being a true creative musician.:)

hello Alami-
my two cents worth- the overall arrangemnt is good, and to me it is slightly reminiscent of some of the music Ziad el Ahmadie has done. It would benefit from a better mix; as fadel points out the oud is too much in the background and I think the drums are also too much in front. I think there are moments when the piano could drop out and let the oud take the lead, with drums and bass if you have one, then join in. keep at it bro.
