oud summer camps?

Doc139 - 4-6-2013 at 11:32 AM

Dear friends,
another question: Does anybody of you know of any oud summer camps or oud intensive workshops or something of that kind, anywhere in the world? I know that in the USA there used to be the "Mendocino summer camp" where my friend Haig Manoukian from NYC used to be the teacher for oud for many years. Does it still exist? But anyway, from Europe that's a bit far away for just a one week's workshop.
Any other kind of summer camps or intensive workshops you know of?
Thanks, Salamat,
Alexander

Simon Shaheen's retreat in Massachusetts is great, not just oud but all classic Arabic music.
I believe Ross Daly does something in Europe (Crete, maybe?) and Matthias has talked about something else, possibly in Germany.

I found the one from Matthias:

Hi Alexander, :wavey:
there are workshops for oud in the OMM in Mannheim/Germany.

I just want to bump brian prunka's recommendation
I have wanted to go every year since 2004 and have been able to make the scheduling work twice. It is a great experience ( not so much of a camp experience though more of a conservatory vibe)

It is intense ( but fun) and great to be part of a community doinga week of total immersion in Arabic music.
Highly recommended

no better recommendation that ross daly's 'labyrinth' center, located in the small village of houdetsi, crete. week long seminars with world class musicians invited from turkey, iran, iraq, afghanistan, egypt etc... study hours are roughly 10-1 and then 5-8 in the evening...people are boarded in village houses, and lessons are held either in the village school or in the labyrinth center, which is a 19th c. structure surrounded by a high wall enclosing a garden...two tavernas service the village-where the music continues into the greek summer night.
this is not a party scene-and definitely intense musically!

classes are offered both summer and winter!

The """problem""" with Ross Daly's Labyrinth, for arabic style oud players is that as far as I know, they teach Turkish oud, isn't it?

reminore - 4-22-2013 at 03:24 AM

there have been seminars offering master classes in the musics of a number of cultures, iran, afghanistan, egypt etc. but the emphasis is on the ottoman/turkish-greek connection...there has been 'arabic' oud previously, however...but there are fewer people playing that music in either greece or turkey...

Simon Shaheen's retreat dates and application form are up:

I'll also 2nd and 3rd and 4th Ross' workshops in Houdetsi, Crete. The overall experience is fantastic and the price can not be more affordable. If you're in Europe the travel is fairly simple. I do think in the past there has been a workshop on oud with a focus on Arabic music but I'm not 100% sure.

Here are some more ideas:

Vienna, Austria --
You may want to get in touch with the people in Vienna at:
http://www.makamhane.com

They've sponsored workshops in the past with Necati Celik. Send them an email and see what they are up to.

Mannheim, Germany --
OMM has had Necati Celik and Yurdal Tokcan give seminars:

New York City --
MakamNYC...we just had a great 5 day workshop with Yurdal Tokcan in early April, in fact Ross Daly among others also gave workshops. It was a great success. This should be happening annually so look again for it next year.
