Arabic Oud size

Dear friend,

All Arabic ouds are not exactly the same. For example, Iraqi ouds may have a shorter scale, some Nahats have deeper bowls, etc.

If you are interested in a typical Nahat "blueprint" you may want to get the excellent book "The Oud Construction and Repair" by Richard Hankey (Dr. Oud). You will find references if you search this web site or the internet http://www.droud.com/.

Generally speaking the width is about 14", length of face about 19", depth of bowl about 8 " and length of neck about 8 ". The scale (nut to bridge) about 24 and 1/4"

You will also need the position and size of the shamseya and qamareyas, and the width of the neck at various points.

Send me an e-mail if you need more details, or, better yet, get the book.

Good luck
Spyros C.

Dr. Oud, What units are these dimensions in?

Regards,
Elie

Doc, There might be a typo in the decimal place. I think these would be very small ouds. Since 21 mm is only 0.83 inches.

Elie

Yes, these are the new Micro-nano ouds, played by dust mites.
Actually the dimensions are in centimeters. I revised the table and added some more Nahats.
