Buzuq dimensions

iskndar89 - 4-11-2014 at 11:49 PM

I'm in the process of building an electric Levant style Buzuq. Does anyone know any common dimensions, eg. thickness of neck. Right now I'm tackling the drawing of full size plans. Working off a picture of a Nazih Ghabdan Buzuq I've sized up the picture to match the scale length of 75cm. The shortfall of my effort is I'd like to know the distance from the nut to the neck joint/body. If anyone could share any measurements I would be highly grateful, I would like to add a Buzuq to my collection. Thanks

I measure 50 cm on my buzuq, which was built by Nazih Ghadban. I am taking the measure from the fingerboard side of the nut to very end of the neck where it meets the bowl.

Thanks. Could you tell me the width of the fretboard at the nut and where it meets the bowl too?

It's 3 cm at the nut and a tiny fraction less than 4cm where it meets the bowl.

I have an unrelated question if it's not too inappropriate: What does a Nazih Ghadban Buzuq usually cost?

They seem like brilliantly crafted instruments

The prices vary. I'm sure that Nazih Ghadban will respond to an email inquiry and will tell you the price of any instrument. English, French, Arabic, you'll find a medium to communicate. Including the shipping, and a specially made shipping box the total from Lebanon to the west coast of the USA was $1775. That's a lot for a buzuq but Greek bouzoukis of lesser quality go for a lot more. And this instrument *is* beautifully crafted, had some special wood, and has an exceptional tone. So I think I paid a fair price.
