Yes, i've done this before too, using Cakewalk though. I can usually pick out the notes but it gets too fast i'll record it and slow it down to 1/4
speed. Its a nice trick! Cheating perhaps...

I use an iPad/iphone app called tempo.
you can slow down any recording WITHOUT changing the pitch.
you can also drop loop points around a difficult section so that it just plays over and over again. Great tool for transcribing.
