Women making ouds

Guldeste - 12-14-2014 at 10:22 AM

Hello everyone.

Does anyone know any women who are making or repairing ouds, or have done in the past?

Thanks for your help.

YES, there have always been female violin makers, some on guitar, and I've seen at least three in Turkey making ouds to a good effect. I will try to find there names.

Lady Luthier

Alfaraby - 12-18-2014 at 02:30 PM

Yes why not ? It's not hard labour at all, but she'd have to give up manicure ...
Actually it's a fine job, very delicate and sophisticated .. as female are
A lady making and/or playing oud is probably paradise. Look at the old paintings and you'd find a lady playing an oud.

I could find two Arab female oud makers:
Carol Alra'ey - Beirut , Lebanon كارول الراعي
Mary Taweel - Damascus, Syria ماري طويل

Carol started in 1986 by repairing her oud, then in 1994, instructed by Ramon Taye'a - ريمون طايع -, started making her own.
She's a player & a singer too, in her late forties.

Mary (in her twenties) is the third generation of oud makers. Her grandfather, Ibrahim Al Taweel, was a fine luthier back in the 1950's-1980's, who taught her father Tony, who taught her. Tony has a workshop at the new handcrafts market in Damascus.

I've never met a lady luthier. I wish I will some time :)

Yours indeed
Alfaraby

Thanks very much for the pictures!

And thanks for the new names! But Alfaraby, are the Taweels able to continue in Damascus now...?

Alfaraby - 12-19-2014 at 01:46 AM

As much as I hear, life is going on as always in Damascus. Riots take place in the coyntryside.

Wish all this end.

Yours indeed
Alfaraby

The last time I had contact with he she had moved to Austria I believe. She has also made some beautiful santurs with a tunable bridge system.

Amazing. Thanks so much.

It's strange - having read her text - that she didn't know about Mathias Wagner. She knows / knew not a singer oud maker or restorer in Germany when she wrote it. But perhaps he added ouds to his portfolio after 2002, when she began? There are now at least two 2 makers in Berlin as well, Turkish-style.

Which text do you speak about here? Can you give it to me?

Guldeste - 12-21-2014 at 03:52 AM

Hi Matthias. Perhaps you were making only occasional ouds at that time, which would fit?
