Ouds and the Ladies

spyrosc - 1-11-2005 at 08:39 PM

It seems that most oud players we talk about are male, but I didn't want people to get the idea that lady oud players were not important.

I'm attaching a soundfile (and placing a picture in the Gallery) of Mary Goshtigian, an Armenian lady oud player from Fresno California, playing and singing Armenian in the Turkish style (they came from Constantinople), circa 1939.

Enjoy

Very nice! Thanks for letting us hear this recording. :) I really enjoyed it. Are there any more like this?

Take care,

Hey everyone! :D

Half the forum members will remember me, and the other half will have no idea who I am. This site has apparently grown exponentially since I last posted, and I'd like to congratulate Mike on that.

Mav, how are you, man? I'm very glad that this topic has been put up. I was just listening to Goshtigian's stuff the other day for the first time, and was quite surprised that she was now posted here.

The Library of Congress recorded a lot of her stuff, along with some kamanche players, and other instruments as well. Here's the site to find it all:

http://memory.loc.gov/

Just type her name into the search, and the sites will come up with the pieces. I believe her husband is in some pieces as well.

I hope all is well with everyone! Hopefully, it won't be 5 months until I post again.

Wishing you all the best,
TP21

Yes, the Library of Congress is a source of her stuff and others as well.

And you are right Hardop Goshtigian is also there with his violin and they do a couple of nice taqsims together.

Hello fine people

I liked that sound file alot. Thanks Spyrosc for sharing this man.

My wife has started to learn the oud and one day I'll get her one of her own. She played Mandoline long ago.

I wonder where to buy oud for ladies?

TP21.. It's been a while man !

How are you and how is your playing?

Keep in touch brother.

Regards to all

Emad

Thanks Spyros

Thank you Spyros for sharing the soundfile and opening this new topic. Hope my wife will be encouraged to learn to play this wonderful instrument. I have an aunt and she played oud since she was a child. She is now in her sixties and she plays the oud occasionally.

I have an hanum oud for sale made by Mustafa Copçuoglu of Kadiköy. Many people consider him now to be Turkey's top oud maker. The oud is not cheap, but it is finely made and the sound is exquisite. It was brought to the US by Üstad Necati Çelik. Feel free to call me at 415 492-0728.
