best cheap oud

Chris_Stephens - 2-5-2015 at 12:38 PM

If you were given the task of finding the best oud you possibly could (online) for around 500$ which would you buy?

I know this gets asked often, but there are some items come and go on ebay, im looking at this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/110972547835

The only oud at $500 or less that I would ever really trust is a used Sukar. If you get lucky you might find one in that range eventually. Can you go any higher?

u can buy a pro oud at $800 from Iraq...

That's a tough one.

The "Mid-East" ouds are consistently in the price range and I've had some students who had good luck with them. They're definitely "student" level instruments but some are OK.

This Khalifa was refurbished and improved by our own Dr. Oud, so I would be pretty confident that it's decent: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Khalifeh-Arabic-Oud-1990s-US-Seller-/151574...

This one looks pretty well-made:

This one looks like it might be ok but a bit more of a gamble than the other two:

If it were me, I would save up an extra hundred bucks and get this:

this also looks OK:

Of course some will tell you that there's no sense in buying a cheapo oud, and it's true.

But my answers are in the spirit of your question and assuming there was no other choice.

Also, Mike seems like he's out, but there have been good reports of the student-level ouds he's been importing from Egypt. I think he said he should be getting more in a couple of weeks.

Thanks Brian, that Khalifa is beautiful. That might be the one, it will be that or a student oud from Maurice. I've seen those other ones and have some skepticism as to how good they actually would be. That Sukar is a very nice find too. I appreciate it.

you can buy from Fares and Leith Jehad. very nice people.
U2U me if u planned to buy from them. They just speak arabic.

Actually I bough at 700$ and paid 150$ for shipping. I received a very nice Indian rosewood floating bridge oud with red cedar top with a nice hard case. If you want walnut bowl the price will be less.
