changing a 5 course into 6

journeyman - 6-10-2015 at 06:13 PM

Has anyone here added and extra string to an oud that was built for only 5 courses? If so, how satisfactory were the results. I'm thinking particularly of the lowest string and going on the assumption that there is room in the peg box to drill for the additional peg.

My initial reaction is you're better off getting a 6 course oud. Not only do you need to have room in the pegbox but you need to make sure the bridge, neck and nut can support the sixth course without cramping the rest.

Hello Roy
my advice to you is to leave the oud the way its...you will got used to it and enjoy the instrument...I have an old Nahat oud with only 5 strings and I love it...
have fun,
Adel

You can watch and judge for yourself

Thanks for all the comments. I was curious as one came up for sale that looks like a nice oud; a Persian builder from Iran. From the photos it looks like a conversion would not work. I've never tried a 5 course oud; maybe I'll go have a look just to see if it is something I would get used to.
