Foad Jihad Film

Ronny Andersson - 2-2-2005 at 11:33 AM

I have uploaded a very interesting film by the Iraqi television about Foad Jihad and his work.
It is in Arabic but workshop scenes and music is
still of great interest for non Arabic speaking oud fanciers. We are working with the English subtitle so have patience. You can download the film here Oud Film

Very nice, Ronny! Love it. When was this footage taken?

Elie Riachi - 2-2-2005 at 05:43 PM

Thanks Ronny. Enjoyed the movie and the music. That was a nice closing piece and interesting style of playing by this Oudist. I must have missed his name during the credits. Any idea of who this player is?

Hey Ronny,

This is great. I haven't had a chance to sit down and watch the whole thing yet, but I tell you what, I can't wait until I can. I really like Fouad Jihad's ouds. I have seen Ghassan Bashir's and I think it is excellent!

Thanks again,
Mike

Happy that you liked the video, it was Foad Jihad who sent it for us. The players name is Ali Sabah, I had a post with him earlier.

basically it's a clip from the movie. For those who doesnt speak arabic (hor have difficulties with the iraqi diaclect) we are working on the subtitles, so its coming soon.

Jameel,
Somewhere in september last year, I remember Alaa (Foads eldest son) told me that the Diar channel (iraqi tv) was making a documentary about them. So the movie is quite fresh.

Jameel, I'm working on a new design for Yaroub's site and I'm uploading some videos from his workshop where you can study him in his process to build an oud.
It will be online this month.

I agree, Ali Sabah's closing piece is more contemplative than the other compositions and the classic oud sounds very good. He's trained in the Shamma style (plays his compositions) and the combination of risha and finger pluck is typical for the present oud schools of Iraq.

souhail - 2-19-2005 at 01:29 AM

i liked the video so much many thanks to you Ronny and Walid you are great

souhail - 2-19-2005 at 01:45 AM

Something kept my attention when seeing this video : Mr Foad when he is asked about his sons, he said "they know like me or they are better than me, they have new ideas.." and when he is asked about technical questions like how to design the braces for the Munir Bashir model he gave no information:)
he didn't give any technical information in how to build a oud. only general informations that every body know.
he is a professional luthier;)

walkad - 2-19-2005 at 02:16 AM

Well Souhail are you surprised;) This is typical for luthiers, they never reveal their secrets.
I nice comparison is to Benedettoguitars, Benedetto is a well know luthier who charges around 20000$ for a guitar. Although he have mad lots of guitar making instruction videos that you can buy for big money, and you can attend courses that he holds, no one can achieve guitars with his sound. There is just something he's not telling!!

souhail - 2-21-2005 at 01:53 AM
