Ouds in Morocco

pbay1129 - 1-8-2016 at 09:23 PM

Hello all!

My name is Pat, I'm a working musician/multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles CA. I will be visiting Morocco in a few weeks.. specifically Tangier, Casablanca, and Marrakesh. I am hoping to purchase an oud while I am there.
I did a search of the forum and came across the luthier Khalid Belhaiba, but the thread was a few years old. Was curious of any others to check out while I am there.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Hello Pat,

Khalid Belhaiba had some people working with him who now make their own oud.
I remember Majid Atik but there's another one.
If i remember his name i'll tell you.

There are 20, 30 oud makers in Morocco, but the quality is pretty low here.

If you go to Essaouira, you are most welcome, make some music!, drink some tea.. Send me a U2U or email frank.n.leriche@gmail.com

Abdltif Lgrini also worked with Belkhaiba.

thanks for the info franck! Had an amazing time in Morocco. I ended up visiting Khalid's shop in Casablanca but he needed at least a few days to make one.
I didn't come across any other ouds that were decent enough quality.

However I did get a loutar while I was there, a very intriguing instrument that i just couldn't put down. A much more Moroccan instrument as well I suppose.

Will definitely visit Essaouira next time though! I heard it is a fabulous place from several locals.

I'm very happy you had great time in this beautiful part of the world.
You will be most welcome to visit me next time if i'm still living n Morocco...

I have been trying to acquire a loutar, but (being in the UK) it has proved impossible so far. I was told there was a shop in Paris selling them, but I can't find it. I'm not able to afford to visit Marrakech or Essouira myself (Bob Music shop, etc) so does anyone have any idea on how I might get the loutar I want...?

Hi Steve,

If you are still in Paris, you can get in touch with René Ohana, he owns a vintage optician shop.
As he is from Morocco and a great fan of musical instruments, he might help you.

Hi Steve, check you u2u. I have one I don't use. Same instrument Mohamed Rouicha used to play.

A message from Soren of Palm Guitars, Amsterdam:

He has another loutar available for sale, from the same maker as my new instrument (see "left handed" thread).

Check out the Palm Guitars website if you are interested…

Belhaiba has moved his workshop to the Western suburbs of Casablanca in Dar Bou Azza, although he (or one of his students) maintains a workshop in Csablanca. Near Belhaiba's workshop is that of Zitouni, who also makes professional ouds. They're both quite difficult to find as they basically work out of their houses which require you to leave the paved road.
