Georges Lammam's / catalogue of melodic patterns in Arabic music?

el-esseily - 9-21-2016 at 11:58 PM

Dear friends - does anybody know where I can get a copy of Georges Lammam's 'Studies for Arabic Music', with the accompanying tape?

Or has anyone come across any other material that looks at or catalogues typical note patterns within the maqamat?

Many thanks!

Have you tried contacting Georges on his Facebook Page?

Can you make a feedback if he tells you the book is still available ?
Thanks !

Unfortunately Mr Georges doesn't have any more copies, and advised me to look on Maqam.com - who don't have any either...

So I know that this kind of mental catalogue of melodic phrases is something that every musician builds up over time from listening. Just wondering if anyone else has tried documenting them...? Especially if they vary from maqam to maqam - I don't know if my ear is that subtle...!

I have been keeping a notebook of such material myself, but it would be great to see what a master like Georges has. Perhaps a library has a copy? Maybe I can talk to him about republishing it through oudstrings.com.

Hello
Every teacher I learned with advised me to build my own repertoire.
but for sure i would be interesting in buying a copy if you published...with records of the patterns even better, for the feel ...but this begin to be a huge work

To stay in the subject, el esseily, have a look at Sami abu Shumays website (maqamlessons.com). He has gathered a collection of typical phrases in some main maqams.

The Maqam book from G Lammam, but no recordings.

Got the book from one of my oud teachers a few years ago.
Not sure how useful it is for oud. More for violin?
Took a long time to get the pdf book below 500kB.
For whatever it is worth.....

Thank you for sharing, very kind.

Indeed they seem more as scale exercise than a collection of typical sentences (which by the way would be a great work to gather !).
Just a first opinion, I 'm not very good at just reading. I will try later with an oud in hand

Best regards

Interesting, this is very similar to the types of exercises Simon Shaheen gives out. Useful stuff, great for singing/ear training, though I had expected something a little different from the title.
