I transferred a old VHS tape from the 80s that are interesting to watch. It's with the lutenist Anthony Rooley when he visited Cairo.

Many thanks for posting this video Ronnie.

I watched a pre-release of this film while attending the 'English Ayre Summer School' - hosted by A. Rooley and Emma Kirkby - at Dartington College, Devon, England in July 1979. I was at that Summer School 37 years ago with my late wife Carol and our two young sons so this film has triggered fond memories of that week.

Thanks Ronny for posting this lovely movie! Nice recordings from the 70ies - incredible how far away those times seem to be... we are getting older :mad:

Many thanks John & Alexander.
Some years ago, maybe 10. I contact Brian Cohen When I was curious about the oud he built to Rooley because I have never seen anything more of the oud in addition to this television broadcast. Unfortunately, Brian Cohen did not know if Rooley used it for any concerts or recordings. Now after all these years I'll try to get in touch with Rooley to quench my curiosity.

What a great video, thanks for posting it!
I visited the Gamil Georges shop in Cairo in 1993, so quite a bit later than the film. Nevertheless, the very same genial gent who features in the film showed me around. From watching the film I now finally realize who he in fact was!

The oud I took home that day is remarkable in particular for its playability, steadily establishing itself as the instrument in my collection that I focus on and enjoy most.

Thanks for posting! This brings back memories of a great movie from 1990 by german director Fritz Baumann "Al Oud". I was really surprised it is still available here:

I do not know if there are english subtitles on the dvd . . .

The link to an ontro of the movie is provided here:

Edit: In some scenes there are subtitles, but just in german.
