My 2 Mustafas and Others for Sale!

Hank Levin - 7-15-2017 at 03:16 PM

I have four ouds for sale from my personal collection. I need to sell these ouds because I have a major expense coming up.

Each of these ouds has a remarkable sound and exquisite workmanship. The actions are perfect, and set up low to facilitate the subtle embellishments in Turkish classical music.

Two of the ouds are by Mustafa Çopcuoğlu Usta in Istanbul, who many consider to be Turkey’s top oud maker.

One Mustafa was made in 2007 with a wenge back. It has an extended fingerboard, horn rosettes (of course) and well-fit ebony pegs. Please note that this oud has a beautiful turtle shell mizraplek (scratch plate) whose color matches the horn grill's unusual natural golden color. Turtle shells are perhaps not politically correct, but they sure have a nice sound and are very traditional on fine ouds.

The other was made by Mustafa in 2006 for the son of a multi-millionare friend of mine. The back is of wenge and ash (contrasting colors). It has an extended fingerboard. Exquisite sound!

Each of these cost over $2500, plus the expense of going there, waiting for them, and hand-carrying them back. I had hoped to get about $3000 each for them, but will let them go for best offer.

Another I need to sell was made by Vefa Aldemir and Ahmet Tepan in Izmir in 2008. The back is ebony and mahogany. It is easily worth $1500. It has a 58.26 cm scale, and a standard fingerboard. I will address reasonable offers.

Another oud is a "zinna" or hanım (woman's) oud made by Hüseyn Aktel Usta, an apprentice of Mustafa Usta. It is smaller, has a slightly shorter 56.83 cm scale, and contrasting walnut and mahogany ribs. Hüseyn Usta is an administrator for a technical and vocational academy in Kadeköy, and a friend of Necati hoca. He makes ouds for serious students, and is quite prolific. Such an oud is hard to find here in the US, and should go for at least $1500. I'd been saving it for a student, but I'm not doing much teaching here in Medford and I need to sell it, so...
