Removing the varnish from ur oud

Chris_Khouri - 3-10-2005 at 06:05 PM

How do u guys do that? What do u use? and how do I keep myself from over doing it? How will it change the sound of the oud?

Sorry for my many questions.

Hey Chris,

I don't know if I agree with my friend Lee on this one. I think you have one of the - I hate to use this term, but - tourist ouds, right? I think if you remove the finish from the face, you can only get a better result. I did this with one of those ouds before, and I was kind of happy with the result. In other words, it didn't make things worse. The face is probably thicker than it should be on one of those ouds, so you don't have to worry about that issue. So my recommendation would be to do it. Just use some fine sandpaper and make it happen. You really have nothing to lose. Maybe you can post some photos of your oud again to give us a better idea of what you're working with. But honestly, I don't think you will make things worse.

Good luck,
Mike

Others a lot more qualified to answer this than I am, but I asked a similar question a while back:

It would seem to me that chemically removing the varnish might be easier. Check Dr. Oud's answer in that link. He recommended, among other things, rubbing alcohol.

Thanks Mike,

I will post pictures of my oud tonight. I promised to do that before but i wasn't able to complete the task, but today my friend will come with a digi. camera and take care of that. Tell me what u think when u see them.

Hilal (also known as Chris depending on the mood).
