Sanding and polishing

Oudsofjoy - 10-17-2019 at 12:27 PM

A friend had an old oud with some cracks and bad scratches. It also needs some repair. I’m wondering who’s got experience with sanding and refinishing the back. Looking for ideas if I should use certain polish or varnish.

Started sanding. I’ll probably will be doing French polishing.

DO NOT SAND THE OLD FINISH. The back may be thin already and certainly will be after you sand it. You might just ruin it if it gets too thin.

If it's shellac finish (most old ouds), rub it off with 0000steel wool & alcohol. Orther finished may need a stripper, but DO NOT SAND!

Thank you, I’m afraid I did it already. Didn’t run into any issues. But now I’m gonna need to find out how to apply the shellac. Do you have a brand that you recommend?

I use TruOil varnish applied with a pad like French Polish. It's much more durable than shellac.

Richard are you talking about Tru-Oil gun stock finish? I’m embarking on a restoration myself...

Yes that’s what he meant, the gun stock finish I believe. I put on the oud that I sanded and worked well. But make sure you use a lint free cloth and you have to apply multiple coats. I did probably 5 coats.
I really need to find the best finish on ouds. I know most ouds have a sprayed finish.
