Teacher in Los Angeles

Anyone know if a good oud teacher in Los Angeles exists?

I've heard mention here of Weal Kakish, however I've been trying to get in contact with him with no success. Not sure if he is still in LA either.

Try Naser Musa, who has been one of my teachers: https://nasermusa.tv/oud-lessons/ You could also try contacting the Kan Zaman Ensemble and see who they recommend: http://www.kanzaman.org/index.html I don't know what he's doing these days, but Simon Shaheen's brother William lives in the LA area, as far as I know: https://www.facebook.com/william.shaheen.3/timeline?lst=1345240209%3... Afif Taian, who performs (or used to) with Kan Zaman may teach: https://www.facebook.com/afif.taian

Good luck,
"Udi" John

I friended Afif on FB and messaged him. He's not teaching right now (no time). I asked him if there was anyone other than Naser in LA that he could recommend. I'll let you know if he has any further suggestions.

Thank you John! I sent him and William a message but didn't hear back, seems like they're not available. I still have to touch base with Naser next.

Seems my only option might be Skype lessons, much to my dismay  Naser is unfortunately too far from me (at best over 1 hour, at worst over 2 hours).

There are two possibilities at UCLA. Munir Beken for Turkish oud and AJ Racy for Arabic oud. Although Racy is associated with buzuk and flute, he plays oud well. I don't know if either teaches privately but maybe......

It never occurred to me that academics like Beken and Racy might teach private students, but no harm in asking!

Beken: https://schoolofmusic.ucla.edu/people/munir-beken/
Racy: https://schoolofmusic.ucla.edu/people/a-j-racy/
