Amazing technique on super challenging key by Simon Shaheen

This is what every Oud player should aspire to.
This is a good example of outstanding Oud technique in one of the most challenging keys on Oud, Bayati on C. This mash-up goes from Maqam Kurd on C or Nahawand on F(not sure), with a change to Bayati on C at 19:24.

I often fight myself with how much I hate playing Bayati on C because of the large stretch to hit D quarter flat in the bass range, and how weak the high range can sound sometimes above G up the fingerboard.

But with this video I got a huge lesson.

a few notes:

1. use of 4th finger for D quarter flat and 3rd finger for C in the bass range. What a boss move...

2. You must not hesitate with the high range and you have to really hit the Oud with strength and control to bring out the high range well. Just play the damn thing.

3. Use of middle range E flat, F and G in closed position on the D string to support the melody on the high C string. Amazing. Never thought this is much of an Oud move, but it's doable.

Navid, this is an awesome video, thanks for sharing.
I'm pretty sure the part you mention is just Kurd C, though, not Bayati. It does go to Bayati C later, about 20:40, but he only plays it on the high c' string.
He does a beautiful thing on the kurd parts though, where he starts the Db high and slides down into the real Db, which almost makes it sound like he's hitting bayati for a second.

That said, I know what you mean about it being a drag playing bayati C on the A string, but you're right it's totally doable and I'm sure Simon would have no trouble!

This was really uplifting. January basically started out like crap and ended even worse. Thanks for sharing these videos guys. Brings back some good memories of Jameelo, Mavro and Samiro coming to visit and our semi-impromptu gatherings at my old condo. Needed this!
