New Aquilla Supernylgut?

stos - 2-7-2020 at 04:53 AM

Dear oudists,

I juste discover this https://aquilacorde.com/en/shop/modern-instrument-string-sets/oud-en...

and I wanted to know if anybody heard of it or tried it yet?

Is there a difference with the red ones?

Is the D wound one or another material like on the red ones?

I hate the red colour so I was quite happy to see this but I want more info before purchasing

Thanks!

I just talked with Aquila, and yes, they have brought back the nylgut oud sets, with some changes.
This is the white "super nylgut" that was in the last incarnation of the old sets, with wound d. Instead of the red strings, they are all silver-plated copper wound.
The strings are available individually again.

So are the wound strings the orange-ish copper ones? And are the white super nylguts the same as the ones that were in the 13O set which had red wounds and white trebles?

They are silver-plated copper. So, similar to the old ones that were plain copper, but they are silver-plated, which usually makes strings last a bit longer.
Aquila also told me they improved the wound d to be more durable.
The super nylguts are the white ones that were in the last version before the red "sugar" trebles. So yes, the red wound/white treble version.

As I recall, those white ones were really good.

What do you mean by "sugar" Brian?

The old copper plated version with white nylgut was awesome

The clear red trebles are called "sugar" by Aquila (something to do with the chemical origin or signature).

I haven't tried them yet. They should be fine, but the tension will probably be a bit light at 58.5cm. Aquila didn't say but their Arabic oud sets seem targeted towards 60cm.

But jeez, 22 euros with 15 for shipping comes out to 37 euros for a set of strings. Hope some other websites start carrying this set soon.
