Good luck! Keep an eye out on eBay for the very occasional diamond in the rough. If you see something that looks promising, ask about it here and I'm
sure someone could tell you if it was a treasure or toast.
If you can manage to scrape a bit more cash together, I'd recommend checking with Bülent Eryalman. He makes great ouds for very reasonable prices.
His standard oud was less than $1,000 US when I checked with him a couple of years ago.

thank you for that recommendation. they do look and sound lovely but i think i would prefer something used.

yes please do. i checked online and his ouds look and sound fantastic. may be a bit out of my preferred price range though.
