Good book for learning maqams and taksim

ArmoOudist - 5-7-2021 at 01:38 PM

I'm wondering if there are any good resources for learning different makams (specifically Turkish), as well rules for playing taksim. I have some books for the oud, but none of them go into much detail in this regard.
The books I have are Basics of Oud by marina toshich and elementary course of study for the oud by Frank Elias.
Thanks

Enver Mete Aslan's books of Turkish oud exercises are definitely worth a look. His "Ud Alıştırmaları" book is bilingual in Turkish and English.

Mutlu Torun's "Ud Metodu" is probably the most comprehensive method book for learning Turkish oud currently available. It's in Turkish only, but many of the musical examples are pretty self-explanatory. I've found it very helpful.

The Enver Mete Aslan books have been advertised on Amazon and a handful of online shops that sell Middle Eastern/Turkish instruments and accessories. I ordered them from Turkish websites and even with overseas shipping, the prices were much, much cheaper.

Good luck!

I would add Murat Aydemir's 'Turkish Music Makam Guide.' It provides an excellent analysis of sixty makams, and illustrates the performance of each with a taksim and a composed piece from the Ottoman/Turkish repertoire. The musical pieces are transcribed and analysed in the book and are also played by the author (on the tanbur) in the two accompanying CDs.

Makam: Modal Practice In Turkish Art Music by Karl Signell and also: Makam and Beyond: a Progressive Approach to Near Eastern Music Theory by Eric Ederer.

I can add Eric Ederer's book of Makam : «Makam and Beyond : a progressive Approach to Near Eastern Music Theory». Makams are classifyed by Families, quite comprehensive approach... but it's not a book about oud and taksim
There is no systematic and full comprehensive book, every one gives the basics and information learned from masters/musicans/school... detailled by one not others, it can be helpfull.

Here are 6 free PDF Turkish ud instruction books. None are in English, but you might find them useful anyway, and the price is right. LOL To the best of my understanding, books 1 - 4 were created for arts high school students, book 5 for adult education students, and #6 is and old book/version from a well-known author & music teacher.

I think the other suggestions given are good ones.

Good luck!
