Oud maintenance

PaulS - 3-2-2023 at 08:57 AM

I have a Turkish oud (Ali Nisadir) and live in Halifax—where there are a few oud players! I am asking about any oud repair/maintenance within my driving reach. It may end up being something serious or maybe not. Since I tried two set of new strings recently (Pyramid and La Bella) I have developed a really irritating buzz on the g string—especially on B sharp/flat. So it might be just the strings but I began worrying that it could be something loose inside. I do drive to Ottawa/Montreal and sometimes also to Boston so if you know anyone enroute…I would appreciate advice.

Chris Pantazelos is just outside of Boston in Lowell. Does great work. Trained by the master, Peter Kyvelos.

Cracked rosette!

PaulS - 3-4-2023 at 10:26 AM

I have discovered two tiny cracks in the rosette. When I touch they somehow realign and the buzzing stops, then comes back after awhile. Hard to imagine something so tiny could cause such discord! Anybody have any ideas? Does it have to be replaced? It doesn’t appear to be loose… or is there some other fix?

Just above and to the left of the central circle

Is this bone or plastic? My luthier once told me to use superglue if the rosette partially detached from the soundboard. I'd try dropping small amount of super glue on (both sides of) the cracks and then realigning. Hopefully this will mend the crack for a while till you can get to a luthier.

THANKS!

Yeah I think it’s plastic. I will figure out how to superglue the crack.
