There are many ud teachers in Istanbul:

Sinan Erdemsel
Necati Çelik
Yurdal Tokcan
Mehmet Bitmez

in no particular order have all been known to teach ud for varying levels of students.

Hi Eliot!

If I'm not mistaken, Necati Çelik was Yurdal Tokcan's teacher, and Yurdal is Sinan Edremsel's teacher. Necati and Yurdal are great ud players and I've heard great things about Sinan as a musical "guide" and contact for foreigners in Turkey.

Mehmet Bitmez has played in groups led by Kudsi Erguner (ney) and in Burhan Öçal's Istanbul Oriental Ensemble. He sounds like a very competent player on the IOE recordings I have. He also has his own CD out, with samples available: http://www.yenidunya.com/ToolBoxVA/Tools/Mds/Scripts/Music/Album.as...

Just my 2 lira worth...

All the best,
Udi John
