i enjoyed reading that. and i now know that maqam rast should be spelt RASD with a D instead of T. I always thought it was rast!

They misspelled it, they are just reporters not musicians. Rast is written with a "Te". If you want to check up on that quickly go to Mike's Oud
Videos and look at Munir Bashir's video where he plays his famous Rast Maqam and you will see the spelling.

i meant i read it in arabic. and it is ponounced with a "rolling R", a deep S and then a D. please correct me if i am wrong cos i do not wish to make
a fool of myself when i mension that maqam to arabs

I AM TALKING ABOUT THE ARABIC SPELLING.
It is "re", "sin", "te".
Like I said, check the Munir Bashir "Taqsim Rast" Video in Mike's Oud Videos. The introduction has the speeling on screen.

In some Arabic writings, especially from North Africa, one does find the spelling Rasd (for example, the Tunisian modes include Rasd and Rasd
al-dhil). But the standard usage is Rast, which derives from the Persian word "rast" (meaning "straight," "complete," "perfect"). Safi al-Din
al-Urmawi, in his thirteenth-century music treatise, spells the name of the mode Rast. Arabs familiar with the music will recognize both Rast and its
variant Rasd as correct.

Safi al-Din al-Urmawi's main work, "Kitab al-adwar," has appeared in several editions:
1. Edited and annotated by Ghattas Abd al-Malik Khashabah, published in Cairo in 1986.
2. Edited and annotated by Hashim Muhammad al-Rajab, published in Baghdad in 1980.
3. Excerpts translated into French and annotated by Rodolphe d'Erlanger in volume 3 of his "La musique arabe," published in Paris in 1938 (the
6-volume set has been reissued more recently).
The work is rather technical, dealing primarily with intervals, ratios, tetrachord structures, etc. Owen Wright has written a scholarly study of the
treatise: "The Modal System of Arab and Persian Music, A.D. 1250-1300" (Oxford University Press, 1978). It shows that Arab and Persian music were very
much the same in the thirteenth century, and began to take separate paths of development only afterwards.
A good university library should have copies of these works. If you have a problem send me a U2U and I will try to help.
