Tuning peg question:

blacknumber0ne - 3-10-2003 at 07:30 PM

The tuning pegs on my Oud are terrible, and require me to soak them in saliva, jsut to get them to stay in tune. 30 minuits later, they are dry again and I have to lick them to get them in tune again. Do you think if I buy ebony tuning pegs, it will remedy this problem? if not, any suggestions?

It depends on which material was used for pegs and pegbox. If it is the same wood for both, better put in ebony pegs, but you must use a special reamer, with the same cone as the pegs. I use viola pegs medium thickness, and a standard violine reamer. If the pegs are harder than the pegbox, you can look, where there is to much contact (shiny, like polished, parts) and sand them carefully, then put in peg "soap" (get it from a violin maker) or make it yourself from chalk and a little dry soap. And push in the pegs quite deep.
