Oud Challenge-Identify this artist

Jameel - 11-13-2003 at 04:50 AM

Who's playing the oud here?

What's the album?

Hayyart Albi

Lessa Fakir

Mike - 11-13-2003 at 06:52 AM

My guess would be Said Salam.

Who's the artist

spyrosc - 11-15-2003 at 01:25 AM

Hey Jameel,

This is your friend Spyros C.

Sounds like Al Sunbati

Wasn't "lissa faker" also sung by Um Kulthum ?

Regards
Spyros C.

Jameel - 11-15-2003 at 04:02 AM

Hi Sypros.

Yes, these are songs by Sunbati, (who composed many of OK's best songs) but I don't think he is the performer. It's not quite his style.

Maybe I should calrify.

I downloaded these songs a year or two ago from a now-defunct website.

I have no idea who is playing. I would like to find the CD. I hope there is someone out there who knows.......

elrabee3 - 11-15-2003 at 07:41 AM

those songs composed by el Sunbati, but i m sure the oud player is not him, el sunbati style is totlay differnet. as almogi said once, if riad el sunbati played on his oud, u dont any orchestra with him, his oud is enough

elrabee3 - 11-15-2003 at 07:46 AM

BTW, what is the maqam of those two songs, i think the maqam of "Lessah Faker" is ajam, correct me if i am worng.

Mike - 11-15-2003 at 07:57 AM

Hey everybody,

Jameel, I wrote the wrong name for my guess. I meant Said Issa, and not Said Salam. I got the names confused. Said Issa has four Oud CDs out. They are mainly remakes of famous songs. I have one of them, but I can't remember if Lessa Faker and Hayyart Albi was on it. Anyway, I'll check the CD to make sure. But I can tell you that no information about Said Issa is on the CD insert!

Take care,
Mike

TruePharaoh21 - 11-15-2003 at 08:19 PM

With all due respect, I haven't been listening to Um Kulthoum for that long, maybe just about a year (I'm a young'n), but this isn't Sunbati's piece (I'm referring to Hayyart Albi). It's el-Moghi's "Esal Rohak."

Am I wrong?

samzayed - 11-15-2003 at 09:25 PM

http://almashriq.hiof.no/egypt/700/780/umKoulthoum/Songs/

That page tells you the composer, the maqam, and the poet of every Om Kulthum song.

I got my own challenge question: Why is Riad Al Sunbati's last name sometimes spelled with an "m" (Soumbati)? In arabic, it is usually spelled with the "n"

TruePharaoh21 - 11-15-2003 at 09:26 PM

I'm not saying that Hayyart Albi isn't Sunbati's... I'm saying the song isn't Hayyart Albi...

samzayed - 11-15-2003 at 09:29 PM

Sorry, I got it now, I'll look into it, I have it somewhere on this computer . . .

TruePharaoh21 - 11-15-2003 at 09:31 PM

I didn't mean to come off so abrupt, Sam. I may be wrong, I'm not sure. But I think it is Esal Rohak.

samzayed - 11-15-2003 at 09:33 PM

Whatever it is, the melody doesn't match to Um Kalthum's version

Jameel - 11-16-2003 at 04:53 AM

The song I called Hayyart Albi, (I heaven't heard OK's version) is simply what it was labeled as when I downloaded it.....

elrabee3 - 11-16-2003 at 07:25 AM

i agree with TP21 , that song is not Hayrt Albi.

TruePharaoh21 - 11-16-2003 at 11:40 AM

It's all good, Jameel. The site made the mistake. Thanks for bringing the clip to us though, man.

elrabee3 - 11-16-2003 at 02:45 PM

while we are talking about Umm Kolthom songs, can anyone tell me who is the oud player in Umm Kolthom songs "Is'al ruhak" ??

Thanks TP21. A couple more of those songs on my site are also mislabled. I suppose too that some of the songs could simply use the original songs themselves as inspiration and use the same title. This seems a bit plagueristic to me, but it explains why some of the songs don't match the name.

On another note, I really like some of these songs and especially the oud playing in them. This thread got a bit off subject, but I hope that someone out there can still identify this music. I'd like to have the CD since some of the tracks I have are incomplete.

One other comment. For all of you that don't have Rahbani's "Bil Afrah" album. What are you waiting for?? :xtreme:

TruePharaoh21 - 5-14-2004 at 09:29 AM

Again, another 6 months have passed since anyone responded to this one. Has anyone figured out who the player is in these clips? Jameel, were the clips from a CD? If so, what was the name of the CD? Perhaps if it doesn't say it on the CD, we can search around the internet some more.

Zulkarnain - 5-14-2004 at 10:03 AM

Hi

I have a similar collection of "Instrumental Oud" playing only Oum Khulthum's songs-Both front cover have Mr. Sunbathi picture and the playing style is pretty much the same style as those 2 clips that Jameel post. Sadly theres also no description about who is playing the Oud for this recording! I dont think its Mr. Sunbathi playing as the mix of the recording sound very new and modern-I will try to post the front cover images and also try to ask around when Im in Cairo later this month-regards

TruePharaoh21 - 5-14-2004 at 10:13 AM

Hey Zul, while you're there, try to find some rare Sunbati taqsim clips for us. It'd be nice, man.

Zulkarnain - 5-14-2004 at 10:14 AM

Hi

TruePharaoh21 - 5-14-2004 at 10:17 AM

Zul,

What's the name of the CD?

Jameel - 5-17-2004 at 05:23 AM

Hey Zul,

Thanks. This is definitely the same guy. This album has some different songs, but the style and playing is identical. I found the website, and it has some clips. I'll be ordering this one.....

http://www.mirage-records.com/album.php?albumID=360

Ok, I just found THE exact album!! I've been looking for this one for two years!

And another one:

Mike - 5-17-2004 at 05:39 AM

Hey guys,

Those are pictures of Sunbati on the covers of the albums, but the player could be his brother. I don't remember his name. I have a tape of remakes of Sunbati's compositions, and his brother plays oud accompanied by ney, kanun, violin, and percussions. Nice find Jameel. I'll be ordering them too!

Take care,
Mike

Zulkarnain - 5-17-2004 at 06:01 AM

Yup thats the one Jameel! Mike, can you tell us more bout sunbathi's brother? His playing is decadence!

Regards
**Im thinking of hunting those kind of records while in Cairo-any chance?

David Parfitt - 5-17-2004 at 08:03 AM

Hi Jameel

Did you manage to find any way of ordering these recordings on the Mirage website, or did you just email them? I guess they are on CD rather than cassette, but I could not really tell from the site either. Either way, it would be great to know who the oud player is when you receive them.

Best wishes

David

I emailed them today. Waiting for a response. I'll keep you posted

Elie Riachi - 5-17-2004 at 08:11 PM

I am taking a shot in the dark and at the expense of sounding ignorant... But could the name of the artist be Sameh Adel or "Same7 3adel"? I see that written in Arabic on the covers you posted.

Zulkarnain - 5-17-2004 at 08:14 PM

Hi

What else does it says there? (below the artist name)

samzayed - 5-17-2004 at 10:58 PM

You guys, don't break my heart. Sameh Adel is the founder of the Mirage Record Co. See here: http://www.mirage-records.com/aboutus.php

What it says

spyrosc - 5-17-2004 at 11:17 PM

Guys,

Sameh Adel is the Producer of the records.
The company is indeed "Mirage (Digital)"
The rest is the titles of the songs, but nowhere is there the name of the musicians. Sorry...

chuckerbutty - 5-18-2004 at 12:59 AM

I have the first and the second of the Al-Nazaer Sunbati CDs (I got them in Kuwait). Yes, the style is different from Sunbati's, perhaps not as refined although technically very accomplished. I find the incessant tremolo a bit overpowering, but it's good stuff apart from that.

Jameel - 5-21-2004 at 12:34 PM

I wrote to the company in Egypt, but they won't sell to us here in the USA. Bummer.

Zul, can you get these CD's in Malaysia? I would really like to have these, but I'm especially disappointed now after years of searching.

samzayed - 5-21-2004 at 02:35 PM

I contacted the folks at maqam.com. The owner really appreciates the classics, and was excited about these cd's. He's going to try to order a bunch. Apparently he's dealt with this compnay before.

Zulkarnain - 5-21-2004 at 05:14 PM

Hi Jameel

Email me what you want and I get them post to you if its available (cant get it here but I can get it for you while Im in Cairo end of this month) :)

Jameel - 6-11-2004 at 01:52 PM

Hey Zul,

Are these the same as the Cd's on their website? The covers look a little different. Have you discovered maybe some new recordings for Sunbati? Let us know. In the meantime, hopefully maqam.com will start carrying these albums. Tell us more about your trip to Egypt.

Zulkarnain - 6-12-2004 at 08:20 AM

Hi Jameel

Yes its the same one-so far i only found those recording that involve Sunbathi n Omm Khulthum. I will inform you if theres a different one ;)

Mike - 6-12-2004 at 10:40 AM

Hey Zul,

Those first two pictures you put up are of the Saeed Issa recordings. There are four of them, and they are available on most Arabic CD websites. They aren't the mirage records tapes. I think the third picture might be though. The last one is the Sunbati taqsims. Glad to hear you had a great time in Egypt, and welcome back!

Take care,
Mike

Zulkarnain - 6-12-2004 at 07:37 PM

Hi!

Thanks Mike! Glad to be back here too! Yes the first 2 pics are from Said Issa recordings (I only manage to get those 2 volumes) The Sunbathi/Khulthum that I have there are the last one of the third set from Mirage Record.
