muthada - 5-10-2006 at 02:52 AM

hi
this oud is George Nahat 5 string that belongs to samir mahull from galili in Israel.
except the top all original.

I took the picture of the oud in concert that I did for him in Jerusalem.

Welcome aboard. It looks like a heck of a start already. What kind of wood is that?

I am curious about this "George Nahat 1930". It is unlike any of the other examples I have collected from that maker in that era. Can you post a picture of the label and roses? Do you know if the oud had been reworked and when and by whom?

Good looking work on your first oud btw. I like your innovation to use of the shower stall to soak the ribs. It looks like you're building the oud on a stool in the corner. It reminds me of my past, building on the kitchen table when I didn't have a shop to use - it shows what you can do with very little if you have the desire - good work!

Hi Muthada,

Nice work, and the bowl looks like it's going to be really neat, especially with that really great wild walnut next to the mellow mahogany.

dave17120 - 10-11-2009 at 01:21 AM

I have a question, having just found your superb work on this instrument..... going right back to the beginning, you have a photo of the individual ribs in the back soaking in the shower...... my question is, how did you arrive at the precise shape of the ribs in the first place? Obviously, the shape of the ribs will determine the shape of the bowl.

I am working on building a bowlback mandolin, and this is one of the last problems I need to solve???
Many thanks in anticipation..... Dave

ribs shape

muthada - 10-17-2009 at 01:22 AM

hi Dave.

first i followed Dr oud book ,and i use graphic soft to get the precise size of the ribs.

but when i started to fit one rib to each other i realised that the precise shape is not so important and you always need to fine tune the ribs.

good luck with the mandolin.

dave17120 - 10-17-2009 at 04:52 AM

Hello Muthada, thanks for the reply, do you have details of the Oud book you mentioned please? Thanks again, Dave

Very nice work. What is the inlay around the soundhole made from?

em.20 - 3-8-2012 at 06:56 AM

I really like the sound. It looks amazing, especially for your first oud.

Thx to every one!

muthada - 3-10-2012 at 12:03 AM

The inlay around the soundhole made from drop shaped abalone.
