Now Available: Aquila Nylgut--lower tension set

Jameel - 6-13-2006 at 10:06 AM

I just heard from Mimmo that he is going to start offering a lower tension set. See this thread for the details:

http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=3792#pid251...

I know a couple people who have tried this set and loved them for arabic tuning. Now that Mimmo is offering them in a set, we won't have to pay twice as much to get them (it costs about $45 to get this set now, since the strings must be ordered individially). Mimmo is also going to make the wounds silver instead of copper. Sound and tension is the same, but the silver is more durable.

Anyone who is interested in this set please chime in here so we can let Mimmo know how much we want them.

Yes... please!! I love Nylgut but hesitate to put them on certain ouds because of the tension. This would great!

oudman - 6-13-2006 at 11:35 AM

Im definitely in as well, i order them individually and would love it if they came as a set

Hosam - 6-13-2006 at 01:46 PM

i would love if they were the standard set

Aquila strings are proven to be the best brand for most ouds.

I would order aquila strings for my ouds without a doubt BUT ... Going by the price US$45

They would end up costing a person in Egypt the price of another oud. and it would also cost over AU$60 for us here in down under.

I personally do not think strings should cost us that much.

Jameel - 6-14-2006 at 04:17 AM

Thanks everyone for chiming in.

I'm working with Mimmo on bringing this set (and some others) to the USA. I may soon become an Aquila retailer, so you can get your strings form me. Sydney, you'll be paying much less for these through me.

Give Mimmo some more time to package these up, and me as well to get this going.

I wonder how the Turkish Nylgut set is? Anyone use these? Do you like them as much as those who tune arabic?

oudman - 6-14-2006 at 04:19 AM

I actually use the turkish set and use arabic tuning. The tension is of course much less than the arabic set, and it works out nicely.

Hi Mimmo and everyone,

Thanks for all your consideration. It would be nice to have a light version of the Turkish sets as well. Perhaps your light versions should just become your standard versions, since that much tension isn't necessary for good sound if the materials are good.

I know the only reason I stopped using Aquilas was b/c of the very high tension which was actually physically affecting my ouds. The sound was great.

Thanks again,

mavrothis

US Distributor for new set?

freya - 6-16-2006 at 08:58 AM

Is there a US distributor that will be carrying these sets?

Regards,
Harry

Mimmo is now producing these lower tension sets, and they should be ready soon.

I am now an Aquila dealer. You can order these directly from me at the following website:

http://www.msocp.com/oudstrings.htm

I'll be adding other sets too. Hopefully I'll be able to offer a light tension Turkish set as well.

It will be a couple weeks before your order is shipped, as I await my first shipment from Mimmo.

I'm really glad to be able to offer these strings.

Thanks everybody for chiming in here!

revaldo29 - 6-20-2006 at 08:25 AM

Wow Jameel, very nice site. Are you still selling rishas? It would be kind of cool to be able to purchase rishas and strings from the same site.

aquila dealers in the middle east.

oistrach13 - 6-27-2006 at 11:00 PM

hello everybody,

I live in lebanon, and I'm very interested in the new aquila set, would anybody have an idea where I could get it around here? I don't mind getting them from from Jameel, but paypal is not lebanon friendly as far as I know (the country doesn't even seem to exist apparently), and the united states seem a bit too far to get oud strings from.

Tortis picks are also on my list.

any suggestions?

Just a quick not to let you all know I received my shipment from Aquila and if you ordered sets, they will be shipped Monday. I have plenty of sets of both types of the light tension (C,F and D,G lower courses) ready to ship. Get em while they're hot! :D

I couldn't find anything about aquila strings, but the way I understand it, they can be purchased from him?

I believe he uses them on his ouds.

Nazih is an Aquila dealer. Just drop him an email.

oistrach13 - 7-2-2006 at 03:00 AM

I did, he just replied with telephone numbers, which pretty much means they're in stock

I'll give him a call once I figure out the logistics of the operation (not to mention get my finances back in order).

Does anybody think using aquilas would give the same oud a different sound character? Because my oud sounds too soft, and my dugah is quite unsatisfactory (I use pyramids).
