D'addario strings for Aribic tuning?

journeyman - 1-8-2004 at 05:17 PM

The D'addario oud strings are a set of eleven , so does this mean that they are intended for Turkish tuning? Does anyone use these strings on their Arabic ouds with standard or similar Arabic tuning? If so, what has your experience been? Thanks.

Both my oud teacher and myself are using d'Addario strings on Arabic ouds with great results. The 11 strings are applicable to either Turkish or Arabic ouds, although you might find some ouds come from Egypt and other places with 10 or even 9 strings.

It's the tuning (usually DGADGC for Arabic) that makes the difference.

Sorry for the typo in the subject. Arabic, not Aribic.

There have been reports of the 3rd string unraveling with higher tunings. I have used them with good results on my Bashir oud.

By all means, use the D'addario strings if you prefer the sound. I tune it CFADGC, as do many of the people I know that play the oud. It depends on what you feel comfortable with. Whatever produces the better results with you, go for it. Experiment with strings. Try LaBellas and Pyramids. Find what's good for you.

Keep us posted.

Hi

For me, D'Addario is quite a good strings for daily abuse of the oud (I use it on my Turkish oud for practice) on the other hand the Pyramid strings give more pleasure to my live performance (Iraqi oud). I think at the end of the day it will be up to the player preference to choose which strings on which oud on which tuning right?
