My first recorded taqsim

Masel - 7-8-2006 at 06:36 AM

Please listen to this taqsim I recorded today, I would like to hear comments and criticisms of my playing. I am very new to the oud, I've only been playing for two weeks (but I also play the guitar), so I know my intonation is a little off sometimes.

The taqsim is generally centered around maqam rast. I've noticed that I have played much better when I was sitting outside in the garden or on the beach, perhaps I still need to learn to channel the inspiration so that it works even in the bedroom. The oud is a wonderful istrument.

Oh well the file is too big. I will post again when I manage to compress it.

Well I know my playing isn't great yet, and at some parts it sounds sloppy, but even if it didn't move you in any way I would still like to hear at least ONE person's opinion - after all I know what I sound like, I thought it would help me improve if someone more experienced gave me advice as I don't have a teacher.

well done Masel I really encourage you;
you have a very good instrument so if you listen to a lot of great artist's takassims and you look a litle bit in sites dealing with maqam's characteristic you can improve you playing.
also try to play loungas, samaiis... it helps very much.
good luck friend

Thank you, I guess you were saying in a nice way that I need more practice, hehe. I read about loungas etc. and searched but couldn't find any music. Can you recommend some? I don't really understand how it is different than a maqam (except that it has a basic structure), and lots of other things I don't understand like a 10/8 rhythm and stuff like that.

I don't mind playing by ear, but part of me would like to be in control and know what I am doing exactly. Maybe I should get a teacher...

for a first try - brilliant!! ok its a bit rough around the edges but the ornamentation between phrases is beginning to flow and the whole thing is a coherent piece. You seem to be getting a good feel for the playing and that is musical rocket fuel.

Have a good day
