Middle Eastern Songs About Trains?

John Erlich - 3-16-2007 at 10:11 AM

Greetings Fellow Udis,

I am seeking information: My 2 1/2 yr. old son is absolutely crazy for choo choo trains (we live 3 blocks from railroad tracks), and has requested a collection of "train songs." I want to make him a "multicultural" collection.

Do Forum members know of any Middle Eastern songs about trains? I am especially looking for "novelty" songs; the best ones have music imitating the sound of a train. I am also hoping to find generally available recordings (or would be happy to trade copies of out-of-print material).

A very good example from Cuba: http://www.amazon.com/Vacaciones-Vocal-Sampling/dp/B000002HNZ/ref=s... (listen to #8, "El Tren" - these guys ROCK...voices only)

Thanks,
John

The cutest request of this forums history

TootToot, old Egyptian Train song, I think (but not sure) it is Fouad Al Mouhandess, a great egyptian comic.

Lot of Toots but may be not enough Choos, hope it is ok.

Wishing you and your family happiness and good health

Well, there's always 'Marrakech Express' by CSN...;)

Anwar Brahim in Astrakhan Cafe plays a track called
The Mozdok's train
http://www.amazon.fr/gp/music/clipserve/B00004WMY2001003/1/ref=mu_s...

But does not seem imitating the sound of a train.

It's for abdul wahhab but I think its far too slow for a kid :)

Thanks Alami!!!! :)

Stringmanca: I think I have plenty of songs in English, but interesting about the Marrakech Express and the hippies...

Also: Indian (traditional or Bollywood) songs might be fun, too, if anyone knows any.

Peace,
John

Thanks Zal,

I have "Astrakan Cafe" and will go home and listen to it again.

Peace,
John

And Just for the sake of our youngest member "Mid-Eastern" music collection:
The most famous lullaby in our region with the divine voice of Fayrouz and Assi playing bouzoq.

(I know it is going to bring old memories to many many of you, and like all of us who know it, my preferred version comes in the voice of my mother )
Good Night

And just.. (again).. to keep these forums "image de marque" and in a pathetic attempt to make this topic look like "oud related"
(in case someone suspects the fact that we are having a lot of fun making John's son musical library)

Here is the extremely challenging maqamian complex score of Yalla Tnam lullaby that very few oud players were able to play decently (and awake).
Adding some electronic ChooChoos to it can be a great "fusion" project.(just an idea for Dhafer Youssef)

Check out "Tren Gelir Hos Gelir" at http://www.turkudostlari.net/soz.asp?turku=3068

There's at least a couple recording with train sound effects, but can't remember which ones those.

There's a recording of "Kara Tren" that's coming out on Ozlem Taner's album (Kalan Muzik Yapim, some time this spring), but the sound of the train is there to recall a massacre in 1938, so that's probably not the kind of choo choo sounds you're looking for.

yeah I agree. First song that came to mind was the Tooot Tooot song. I'm definately downloading it for my own pleasure, perhaps share it with some friend I'm sure they would love listening to it at an older age.

The only other song I can think about that is about trains is a song by Sana AlKharaz from Kuwait. Sana is known for singing patriotic songs. The song is called "Mashi Qetari", vaguely translated to "My train is running". This song was for the national soccer team that represented Kuwait after they qualified for the 1982 world cup that took place in Spain. The chorus is "Toot toot mashi qetari, toot toot laili wa nahari", reffering to the team as an unstoppable train. Unfortunately there were bigger engines in the tournament :P. I will try to provide a recording within the next few days. It is a really fun song with children singing along.

not middle-eastern and not specifically about trains - though the song does does have a train-related line in it ... i give you the late - the great - james brown:

This is a man's world, this is a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

You see, man made the cars to take us over the road
Man made the trains to carry heavy loads
Man made electric light to take us out of the dark
Man made the boat for the water, like Noah made the ark

This is a man's, a man's, a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

Man thinks about a little baby girls and a baby boys
Man makes them happy 'cause man makes them toys
And after man has made everything, everything he can
You know that man makes money to buy from other man

This is a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

He's lost in the wilderness
He's lost in bitterness

... should be fabulous on oud.

Elliot, thats the only train song I know. Tren Gelir, nice little tune.

John Erlich - 3-19-2007 at 12:33 PM

Merhaba Eliot,

Thanks! Do you know if there's a generally available recording of "Tren Gelir"? I hope you are enjoying Istanbul.

All the best,
John

John,

Here are three performances of the Turkish folk song Kara Tren (Black Train). The song doesn't have any train sounds so it may not be what you are looking for. But it's pretty.

In case you want to play it for your son on the oud here is the notation (makam Ussak - the flat and 2 in the key signature indicate that the B is flattened by two commas).

Thanks al-Halabi! I'll watch and listen to the videos first chance I get!

Peace,
John
