Kamil Shajrawi

Greetings Fellow Oud-Maniacs,

I just surfed into the web page of this Palestinian-Israeli oud player, Kamil Shajrawi:

http://www.kamilshajrawi.com/html/main.html

Does anyone know anything about him? I've never heard of him.

His web page claims that the two Palestinian-Israelis who came in first and second in the 2003 Cairo oud competition were his students, but I thought they were students of Taiseer Elias...

Salaam/Shalom/Shlama/Khoda Hafez,

I have heard his name before, but cant place when-

his violin improv on the site is amazing, it has that Roma feel to it, but definitely 3arabi- you know?

but the keyboards on a couple of the other tracks kill me. WHY?!!! -use them for creative stuff, but not when you can hire a daf and a bass player for God sakes!

When I was in performing in Haifa and Ramallah with Simon, he was playing oud and violin with us (oud when Simon played violin and violin when Simon played oud). He's an amazing musician.

Hi Tarik,

Listening to one taqsim I on his site, it sounded like his technical skill is very high.

I agree with you about the keyboards. Could Samir Siblini please record one ney taqsim CD without synthesizer??!! I have to say that I have one recording of Talal ElMadah (from Saudi Arabia) with keyboard where is doesn't get in the way too much, but this is very rare.

Brian: Do you know if Kamil has any CDs out?

Peace,
John

Hi John,

I have one hour of Samir Siblini playing ney only taksims, it is a clean recording done in my studio with zero effects and I own the rights for this music, I will try to post some of it soon

Kamil taught at Simon's retreat at Mt. Holyoke College the year I was there...quiet guy, amazing player. He performed one of his origninal semai's for us solo, just beautiful.
