Jameelo has started on the finishing. Here are some shots with two coats on the body as well as a real light finish on the soundboard. I personally like a finish on the soundboard. This one is so light it really is not going to affect sound in any way, and you can see that it brought out some color in the spruce. Here are the pics.

This is the back of a 1947 Jerjis Nahaat Oud. The design that you have is much much better that the one in the picture below.

Beautiful as usual Jameel! I don't want to sidestep too much but what's the scoop with the table in the background? Another project? Are you a pro? Lastly, where did you learn your chops? Well anyway, Mike is one lucky fella. Great job.

Jameel - 3-2-2008 at 07:04 PM

Thanks fellas.

Fazhu, I wouldn't call myself a professional at anything, I'm still learning, but in respect to getting paid for it, yes I am a part-time pro woodworker. I have a small webpage for that too. You can see it at http://www.orthodoxsupply.com . Click on carving. I'm mostly self-taught, but both grandfathers got me started making small things, plus a family friend is an expert cabinetmaker and he helped me now and then as well. It's amazing what you can learn by checking out library books and just diving in and trying something. It's a slow method (vs. learning in a school or as an apprentice), but some would say the best.

Just listened at the sample. Nahats builders must be dancing in their graves.
Thank you for sharing this pure holy glory to our ears and eyes
May be you already told us but what tuning and strings will be used?.
Will natural traditional gut strings and horn or feather risha suit??.

Fazhu - 3-3-2008 at 06:16 PM

Ahh, the little Icon above your toolbox makes more sense now. Well, you do beautiful work Jameel. Thanks for the reply.

Drop dead gorgeous!

I can't find words to describe my joy as I gaze at this masterpiece. I'm happy for both Mike and Jameel...what an outcome!

Anyone notice that fine bevel on the edge of the pick guard? That's what I call attention to detail. I won't even get into the finish and the other details...just scroll back up and enjoy the pictures.

Oud of the year!

DaveH - 5-5-2008 at 08:51 AM

That's really a fantastic piece of work. Very precise and great attention to detail. I loved the sound sample with Simon Shaheen. Thanks Jameel for sharing this whole process with us in such detail. It's been really fascinating.

Dr. Oud - 5-5-2008 at 11:03 AM

Superlatives hardly do this work justice. I want to express my gratitude to Jameel for ressurecting the high art of luthery to the oud world. We have been watching the emergence of a master, in design and execution. Alf mabrouk!

Jameel - 5-5-2008 at 04:37 PM

Thanks Dave. But which sound sample are you talking about?

Richard,

That's a very kind and heartfelt comment, that I'm really not worthy of. I'm still learning of course. And you have always been a part of that learning. It was your book that really got me rolling with this. Thanks goes to you Richard!

Jameel - 5-5-2008 at 04:38 PM

Sidi, You're too much! :)

Edward - 5-6-2008 at 11:56 AM

my dear Jameel, you are most worthy, if everyone knew the depth and breath of your artistry, they'd be as overwhelmed as I am. I am honored to have played a part in your development, it's made my crude attempts worthwhile. While I dodn't have the skill to match yours, at least I was able to unlock out some secrets and open some doors for you and others. You've attained a level of expertise unreachable by most, and still retained your humility and perspective to learn more. Yes, my friend, you are most worthy.

Jameel - 5-6-2008 at 04:19 PM

Jameel, I have to agree with Richard's comments. You my friend are worthy of all the complements and superlatives given. If you are just learning I would love to see what you can do when you master your craft but then again a master is always still learning.

Mike you are one lucky guy.

Jameel - 5-20-2008 at 07:59 AM

Thanks Alan.
