At least Jimi Hendrix could play in unusual positions and was a virtuous but this here is nonsense music by two... I dont know what to call them for.

David Parfitt - 7-17-2007 at 12:31 PM

The only thing more irritating than listening to them is watching them.

oudipoet - 7-17-2007 at 01:03 PM

call me old school if you like but i do not consider this as an oud playing

not my cup of tea

And that's what I meant when I said interesting! and interesting doesn't always mean fascinating..eh? :) It's just different!

I don't know...I kinda' dig it. I know it's not traditional, but I like what they're doing. I liken it to acid jazz. A lot of traditional jazz players don't consider it jazz, but the newer listeners really enjoy it. On another note, Japan-I was in Japan last month (Tokyo) and had a great time! I didn't see anything oud related anywhere, and I looked. I did see a couple of good bagpipe players playing in Harajuku.

Orahim1, Actually there are quite a few oud players here in Japan, some of them play well. Mr. Yuji is an example and he has a website at: http://www.oud.jp and Ms. Yoshiko Matsuda at http://www.arab-music.com/yoshiko_matsuda.html and some of them even teach how to play oud like Mr. Mituo Inaoka, he has a website at: http://www.ongaku-kobo.com/chugaku.html . You can see him playing oud in the second picture from the right. He also performs live on stage. There is also an oud shop at http://www.emmaz.net. We also have some oud players and collecters in Mike forum from Japan too.

So, Yes, Oud lovers are all over the globe, including Japan :)

I figured there was a lot of admiration for the oud in Japan because many great oud players tour there, but I had no idea it was this big. Thanks for the link japan.

japan,

Do you know of any shops in Tokyo or elsewhere that sell CDs by Japanese oud players?

Best wishes

David

Hi David.
So, you live in Tokyo?

You can try this:
El Sur Records
2-19-15 Shibuya-ku, Tokyo Shibuya shrine Masuzaka building 1006
TEL:03-5485-9967 FAX:03-5485-9968
E-mail:elsur@h7.dion.ne.jp or Info@elsurrecords.com
Website: http://www.elsurrecords.com/

They carry Japanese oud players CDs along with others. they can probably point you to others if they don't have a certain CD that you want. You will have to contact them if you liked one of the CDs they offer on their website. Just click on "how to order" link in the website.

You can also order Yuji's CD by contacting him at yuji@oud.jp or can wait till they have their online order service running soon at: http://www.oud.jp/pages/cd.html

Hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Many thanks japan!

I don't live in Tokyo, but may have a chance to stop over there for a day or so in the next few years.

All the best

David

I don't know, maybe instead of thinking of it as nowhere near as good as most oud music, we can think of it as a slight improvement from most electronic music.

I don't know. It is just a silly jam, I don't hate it though. Why bother.
