100% Egyptian Oud

charlieyarak - 7-27-2007 at 05:49 AM

I have an egyptian oud that I want to sell but I don't know how much it costs. The back and neck are covered with ancient egyptian symbols (eg. pharaohs, animals) that are made from some sort of acrylic. Has anyone seen an oud like this before? I will post some pictures very soon.

Put pictures if you can.
or tell us if there is a label. usualy you find the label by looking in the oud trough the hole.

I've taken the peg box off to reglue (it was so loose that it needed little force to take off, cheap glue maybe?)

Some of the acrylic pieces have fallen off so I will need to replace them.

Charlie, where in the world did you get that? I swear I havent seen one since I was a kid- my uncle used to carry that exact style in his store and I used to sit and stare at it when my grandmother dragged me there to buy bread and zaatar... what a trip, huh?

MatthewW - 8-4-2007 at 03:50 AM

wow! I've not seen an oud quite like this one! must have belonged to Tutankhamun? ;) all joking aside, when was this made by Hamido? I have no idea what it's sale value is, but I think its kinda cool in a crazy way and would hang it on my wall as a converstaion piece. Is this actually made to be played on ( and have you actually much on it Charlie) or was it made for some sort of display? thanks! :)

Lintfree - 8-4-2007 at 08:22 PM

It's beautiful. It's like those really extreme polyester disco shirts we have all worn at one time if we're old enough to have done so. And above all it's art. And the maker was sincere. You can tell. A little crazy but sincere. Remember those EKO guitars made in Italy? All that accordion plastic? Come on guys it's beautiful. And in the backs of your minds you'd secretly like to own it. Right? Right. D.L.

Lintfree - 8-4-2007 at 08:24 PM

Charlie, you want to sell it? How much? D.L.

charlieyarak - 8-4-2007 at 09:08 PM

I think it is something that just hangs on your wall just for looks, since the guy I bought it off says it used to hang in a museum. I was young and inexperienced and bought it for $500AU years ago.

spyros mesogeia - 8-4-2007 at 11:15 PM

Don't worry my friend.....we all have been young and inexperienced.....:).Personally I have experience too of this type of oud dealers, many many years ago....but after when I meat some oud players and makers I saw the diference of this type of ouds and the quality sound instruments.:)
So don't be desapointed, you have here on this forum the oportunity to meet many oud players and luthiers that they are recognised for theyr work.
If you wish any informations or sugestions don't heasitate to ask us....even if someones will make a joke at the beggining;),I am sure that many of us will respond you to help you:).
Thanks to Mike that has build this forum,we have the opportunity to be all of us members to this unique oud family:airguitar:

hey man

to sum everything up, we are one big family, does not matter who you are or what you belive in.
thx sammy

This forum is very important for many reasons; the main one being that now there is help in finding instruments that are good and people who can give advise that are
PLAYERS and makers who know what they're talking about. I suffer from time to time with "expert-itis" but some things I am very familiar with and sharing that info is no problem. For beginners buying an oud this is important. We all can remember when all we had to go on was instinct or what was available. Now we have this forum.

When we find our way to water we may find that the water rights have been sold to some multinational corporation.

MatthewW - 8-19-2007 at 11:35 AM

hi charlieyarak- yes, as oudplayer said, we are one big family! Anyway I was curious to discover what became of this interesting oud? Did you sell it yet? cheers :)
