Before you write-off the considerable talents of multi-instrumentalist Dr Lloyd Miller, take a look here:
http://www.jazzscope.com/OJ.html

He also has a myspace page.

Regards,

Greg

Y'know guys, he doesn't sound like a 'fool' to me:
Quote:

Dr. Lloyd Miller, who spent 7 years in Eastern countries and 6 years playing jazz in Europe, has been working with Eastern cultures since1950. During the 1950s and 60s, Miller played with top jazz artists in Europe like Don Ellis (where he was inspired by Miller's Eastern concepts) and Eddie Harris including occasional appearances at the famous Blue Note in Paris where he sat in for Bud Powel to play with Kenny Clark. During his residence in Europe, Miller was prominent in the Stockholm. Frankfurt, Brussels and Paris jazz scenes and played at two major jazz festivals in Belgium. During the 1970s, Miller hosted his own prime-time main network jazz show on NIRTV in Tehran.

He looks as if he's having a little trouble holding it.

jazzchiss - 9-26-2007 at 12:12 AM

In despite he doesn't know how to hold the oud, he has a good trill. :)

fartso - 9-26-2007 at 07:15 AM

He seems to be an absolute cool freak and the music is great !

rebetostar - 9-26-2007 at 08:07 AM

Obviously self-taught on oud, but what an interesting fellow!!
Here's some more info:
http://www.jazzscope.com/VAM.html

He spoke 20 languages!!!!!!!!!! And may still.

Even more interesting is the insight this provides into a time when the US and Iran had a healthier relationship.
Persian Jazz.. how cool is that?!

Dr. Lloyd Miller: Rennaisance Man

Dr. Lloyd Miller is one of my teachers. I have learned a great deal by listening to his collection of archival recordings of Middle Eastern, Central Asian, and Asian Music as well as reading his many self published books. One of his most important books, which is currently available at http://www.amazon.com is titled "Music and Song in Persia: The Art of Avaz".

He is currently a Professor of Music at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. He also teaches Arabic and Persian.

His catalog of archival recording and self published books can be found at:

Also think of all the interest he must have brought for the oud among people who may have otherwise never heard (of) one. Good on him I say.

It is currently available for sale on eBay but you might have to sell one of your ouds to afford this record since it is currently priced at $500 with only 5 bids, as of today.

Search eBay: Lloyd Miller "Oriental Jazz".
