I love that Shehata Samir... how did you like the guitar bridge on the Tayyar? I'm still kicking myself over not buying the Tayyar Todda was selling a month or so ago.

Nice Ghadban Meursault, do you have any closeups of the rosette?

SamirCanada - 11-26-2007 at 08:58 PM

the guitar brige was ok... not that i dissliked it.. its more like I didnt notice any difference.
I should have kept one of those ouds but I was young and foolish to let them go...

N. Ghadban (#890)
Charming Arabic and catchy sound, reminds me of copper ambiance in an arabic diwan. Easy to grip. Nice to play.

Excellent finishing in all the smallest details.
Very rich and punchy sound with a beautiful echo and resonance. Adjustable neck. Can be very loud and very soft. Projects like crazy.

I love the three of them. They are very different one from the other and I jump from one to the other very happily.

Benjamin - 12-17-2007 at 02:24 AM

Zoukboy how do you tune your 8 courses oud?
I guess there should be a high F and a low C or D, but what about the 8th string?

DaveH - 12-18-2007 at 03:16 AM

Here's mine - yet another from Nazih's stable. I think it's exactly the same model as Jason's lovely example, but with a cedar soundboard. Zoukboy and Michoud - I was looking into Samir Azad when I got mine. I hear they have great sound. Any chance of a sample? How does the 7 course one work? I string mine F-f' but like the idea of having the low C as a pedal. I was wondering though, does it ever become too resonant? Is damping strings etc a problem? Or is it just something you get used to?

DaveH - 12-18-2007 at 04:35 AM

Sorry that was a bit big.

MatthewW - 12-18-2007 at 05:35 AM

Hi DaveH. I have a 7 course oud (13 strings) from Nazih, the Sada El Rouh model. I find no problems whatsoever having that extra string, which I tune to low C. The rest ff to FF. It's really nice to be able to play a low C or D or whatever under the ff, and to be honest after playing on a 7 course oud I think I'll find it hard to go back to a 6 course one! :)

Oud Freak - 12-18-2007 at 08:30 AM

Hi matt, well same here, I like the 13 string as well, and can't live without it now.

Cool! I'm glad another forum member has that oud. I think I remember Nazih built our ouds together to compare how two identical ouds would sound with different woods for the face. I seem to recall he posted audio examples where he played both ouds.

Oud Freak - 12-19-2007 at 01:39 AM

What is Jason's soundboard made of? Spruce? Jason what difference did you here between the two ouds (urs and DaveH's?)

I found the thread, here it is

http://www.arabicouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=2364#pid1...

DaveH - 12-19-2007 at 02:16 PM

Aw bless! It's like twins reunited. Thanks for the link, Jason. I couldn't revive the sound samples though. If it's anything like with guitars, the spruce will give a lighter, punchier more 'talky' tone and a faster response and the cedar will give a slightly heavier, rounder tone. Cedar has a lot of resin in it so the wood is denser and more oily. In guitars I much prefer spruce, but I really loved the sound of this oud when I first heard it. Nazih is probably right though in his observation that spruce becomes mellower and more expressive with age, whereas cedar probably doesn't mature so much. I just couldn't wait that long. Would love to hear what yours sounds like though Jason. I'm a bit shy putting recordings of mine on the web though as I'm just not good enough and have only been going a year.

My Rapakousios oud:

PeppeOud, do the greek ouds differ from the turkish ones? If so, then in what? Regards

Favorite Baby

Oud Freak - 12-20-2007 at 05:31 AM

Originally a normal bridge oud. Converted into floating bridge which made surprising changes while keeping the color of its first normal bridge sound.

The spots on the soundboard are because of me, when I let inadvertently some iodine to fall on it!!! The lute maker preferred them not to be cleaned up because the spots were not very superficial and the soundboard is very thin (but surprisingly solid). Thank God the sound wasn't altered and always becoming more and more beautiful day after day :)

Who is the maker of your oud, OF? Interesting to see a maple neck... you don't see that much on ouds even though it's a great neck material

Hi OF- can you say more about the changes to the sound after having it converted from a fixed to floating bridge? Was there an increase in overall volume, bass or trebles , sustain, etc? thanks!

Not structurally, not in the case of my oud because it has turkish measures. I observed in istruments i played that greek luthiers have generally the tendency of making instruments with big attack, big volume instead of warm sound and sustain. Luckily Dimitris Rapakousios is a very good luthier so he doesn't have this kind of problems and i'm very happy of being an owner of his istruments.

Mw, well, the conversion is not that recent, maybe something like 4-5 years ago, when I was still a beginner (I still am). The bass and trebles have still the same equilibrium. The sustain too. I guess now it is a bit louder, and the sound is more opened, more out, while still keeping very intimate. The oud has originally been designed as a normal bridge oud, hence a different bracing and the soundboard is a little bit thicker. Have a closer look at the new bridge. Try to compare it with the one of the "yellow" oud posted by me in the previous page, on the 16th of december.

PeppeOud...

that is a fantastic looking oud. Am sure your planning to post more pictures when you get the time :D. It would be really nice to see the bowl, and a straight on shot of the front. Mabrouk

Orahim1 - 12-25-2007 at 04:31 PM

Not the best pic, but here are mine. The acoustic is a 1980 Sandi and the electric is a Najarian. The instrument to the right is my acoustic/electric octave mandolin.

Oud Freak - 12-25-2007 at 09:53 PM

Hey Orahim, I like the sandi one, although I am not a fan of the turkish oud shapes and designs, but this one is really simple and elegant, so enjoy and take care of it.

Just for info: does sandi still make ouds? anywebsite talking about him? what is his full name?
And why is the scotch tape on the face?

Orahim1 - 12-26-2007 at 11:03 AM

Oud Freak-
I don't know if Sandi is still making ouds (his son(s) may still make them). As for the face, that's not scotch tape, it's a piece of fabric, tied in the back by string, that was used to hold a little microphone. It's a wonderful sounding oud with a very warm sound to it.

His full name is Saadetin Sandi and his son Bahadir.
They still make ouds.
They have a shop in Istanbul and I think their workshop is in Ankara (not sure).
I bought one in 2005. A few other members on the forum own a Sandi oud.
Here is his website.

Dear Samir,

I've seen these pics and your post many times, and the oud always seemed very familiar. It's only today that I've just noticed the name "Elie Yammine" on the rosette. I don't know if the oud is made by Elie Yammine or just the rosette. I think it is the whole oud, because his ouds look like the one in the pic.

For information, Elie Yammine is a LEBANESE Oud maker who is said to have his workshop somewhere in dora near St. Joseph Hospital. He is known to work (or to have worked) as an employee in the offices of the "Electricity of Lebanon". May someone correct me if these info are wrong.

Regards.

Dolce - 12-30-2007 at 08:36 AM

OK guys, today is Dolce a happy Dolce! My new oud arrived from Cairo and I am very pleased that it was a good one! The maker is a fellow named Murad Al-Turki and the craftmanship of the oud is outstanding. The sound is more than enough for me and I´ll be sure to post a sound sample soon enough, just after I have made closer acquaintance. here are a couple of pictures:

Oud Freak - 12-30-2007 at 02:17 PM

Hi Samir, thanks for the updated info. So he made "Nothing" of the ouds? Does he know how to make a oud? I once saw an Elie Yammine soundboard of a oud to be repaired. Comments in u2u.

Waiting for Tasos oud

Ararat66 - 2-19-2008 at 02:14 AM

I'll be getting my new oud very soon - I'm soooooo excited, it's like being a kid again (I'm 41 !!). He's sent me one little picture as a taster and here it is. It's a flame maple and ebony stripe with cedar top and custom pickguard that we've designed between us. He calls it my 'other blonde' (Anna and my two little girls are all blondes !!).

He's a real good bloke to deal with, I'll post more delicious oud pictures whe it arrives.

You're right Matthew, I have bags under my eyes and all things I look at seem like ouds like in the cartoons when hungry people only see roast chickens. Ouditis can be a challenging condition to live with ... but someone has to do it:shrug:

OudandTabla - 2-22-2008 at 10:42 PM

Here's an Oud, made by Temil Saz Evi (Turkey) that I replaced the soundboard on. It was completely destroyed, so I used a beautiful piece of figured redwood, over 50 years old. This is not my main performing Oud.
